Qualitative & quantitative สองคำคล้ายที่มักสับสน แต่แยกแยะได้ง่าย

Qualitative adj. เกี่ยวกับการวัดค่า ทางด้านคุณภาพของบางสิ่ง

(CALD) อธิบายว่า ใช้เป็นทางการในความหมาย มาตรฐาน เกี่ยวกับบางสิ่ง ว่าดีหรือไม่ดีอย่างไร

หรือในความหมาย คุณลักษณะ เกี่ยวกับบางคนหรือบางสิ่ง ว่าเป็นเช่นใด

There has been a qualitative change in the relationship between the public and the government.

Quantitative adj. เกี่ยวกับการวัดค่า ทางด้านปริมาณของบางสิ่ง

Queer & quaint & odd

Queer adj. ความหมายเก่าว่า แปลกหรือผิดธรรมดา

What a queer thing to say!

You have a queer way of showing your appreciations.

ในการใช้เป็น slang หมายถึง ของเทียม (fake) หรือปลอม (counterfeit)

นาม slang เชิงดูหมิ่่นหมายถึง homosexual man

(NOAD) อธิบายว่า มีการใช้ queer หมายถึง homosexual ตอนต้นศตวรรษที่ 20

เป็นการก้าวร้าวและหมิ่นแคลนบุคคลเหล่านั้น

ไม่นานมานี้ พวกที่เป็น gay ได้นำ queer มาใช้ แทน gay หรือ homosexual

ในความหมายที่เป็นทางบวก เพื่อพยายาม ลบล้างความเป็นทางลบของคำนั้นๆ

ปัจจุบัน มีการใช้ queer อย่างกว้างขวาง เป็นที่ยอมรับในหมู่ gay

(โดยเฉพาะเป็น adj. หรือ เป็นคำขยายนาม) และยังคงใช้อยู่

Quaint adj. หมายถึง น่าสนใจ จากการที่เป็นของแปลกและเก่าแก่

It was a quaint house with its cupola and gingerbread trimming.

และยังใช้ quaint ให้แสดงว่าคุณไม่ชอบหรือไม่เห็นด้วยกับบางสิ่ง

โดยเฉพาะ ความเห็น ความเชื่อ หรือพฤติกรรม เพราะผิดธรรมดาหรือล้าสมัย

Odd adj. หมายถึง แปลก ไม่คาดหวัง ต่างจากธรรมดา

Wearing sneakers to a formal dance seemed odd behavior to the committee.

หมายถึง จำนวนเลขคี่ ที่ไม่อาจหารด้วยสองได้ลงตัว

The houses on this side of the street have all got odd numbers.

หมายถึง บางสิ่งที่แยกออกจากสิ่งที่ควรเป็นคู่หรือชุด

He’s got a whole drawer full of odd socks.
