Least & less & lest

Least เป็นรูป superlative ของ little

Less เป็นรูป comparative ของ little

การใช้มาตรฐาน ควรใช้กับสิ่งที่นับไม่ได้ = uncountable เช่น ‘less money.’ ‘less time.’

สำหรับสิ่งที่นับได้ ต้องใช้ fewer แทน เช่น ‘fewer people.’ ‘fewer words.’

ให้จำว่า Fewer = not so many และ Less = not so much

Less เป็นรูปแบบการเปรียบเทียบของ little

ใช้คำนี้ในความหมายว่า มีจำนวนน้อย = small amount

แทนที่จะใช้ จำนวนที่น้อยกว่าของ = a fewer number of

ใช้ Less than กับ จำนวนและการแสดงเวลาและระยะทาง

Less than a thousand. Less than ten seconds. Less than four miles.

Least & less สองคำนี้ อ้างอิงถึง จำนวน ขนาด หรือความสำคัญ เสมอ เช่น

‘less value’ ‘least important’ 'less distance’ ‘least influence’

Fewer เป็นรูป comparative ของ few

ตามกฎ ใช้ fewer กับคำที่หมายถึง คนหรือสิ่งที่นับได้ ‘fewer member’ ‘fewer books’

และยังใช้ fewer กับสิ่งที่หมายถึงจำนวน ที่เห็นว่า เป็นหน่วยหรือของ แต่ละอย่าง เช่น

There were fewer than ten contestants.

วลีที่ใช้เป็นคำเสริม ที่ใช้มากเกินควรและควรระวัง เช่น ‘at least’ ‘not in the least’

อย่าสับสนทั้ง least และ less กับสันธาน lest ที่หมายถึง ด้วยกลัวว่า = for fear that

He kept moving his fingers lest they freeze in the bitter cold.

Lest ยังให้ความหมายว่า so that เมื่อใช้เพื่อแนะนำถ้อยคำที่ชี้แนะว่า ควรระวัง เช่น

Don’t say much lest the opposition steal your plan.

She was worrying lest he be attacked. (ไม่ใช่ lest he was……)

She is using headphones lest she disturb anyone. (ไม่ใช่ lest she disturb….)
