Largely adv. ในขนาดที่ใหญ่ ในส่วนใหญ่

The opinion is largely incorrect.

Chiefly adv. เข้มข้น มากกว่า largely เหนืออื่นใด ส่วนสำคัญมากที่สุด

This group has consisted chiefly of conservatives.

We are chiefly concerned with improving educational standards.

คำที่เกี่ยวข้องมีเช่น notably, signally, especially, markedly, exceptionally.


Last & latest

เมื่อเป็น adj. และ adv. ศัพท์ late มี later เป็น comparative และมี last และ latest เป็น superlative

มีความหมายว่า “มาตามหลังสิ่งอื่นทั้งหมด”

Last มีความหมายขยายเพิ่ม มากกว่า latest

หมายถึง สุดท้าย = final. “In his last illness.”

หมายถึง สมบูรณ์ลงความเห็นได้ = conclusive. “the last word in the argument.”

หมายถึง สุดท้าย = extreme. “the last degree of agony.”

หมายถึง เกี่ยวกับจุดจบ = pertaining to the end. “the last day of the year.”

และหมายถึง เดี่ยว = single. “every last seat in the house.”

Latest มีความหมายจำกัดเพียง ปัจจุบัน (current) และ ‘most recent’

This is the latest bulletin on the disaster.

His suit was cut in the latest style.

ที่ควรจำคือ last แสดงความ สิ้นสุด = end และสุดท้าย = finality

ขณะที่ latest ไม่ชี้แนะแบบนั้น

‘Let’s hope his latest mistake will be his last.’

‘When I last saw her, she was excited about her latest boyfriend.’


Late & former

ถ้าต้องการกล่าวถึงสามีคนก่อน คือ former = สิ่งที่มาก่อน = former husband

ถ้าใช้ว่า ‘late husband’ หมายถึง สามีคนที่ตายไปแล้ว
