About เมื่อเป็น กิริยาวิเศษณ์ (adv) หมายถึง ประมาณ (Approximately หรือ roughly)
หมายถึงมากกว่า หรือน้อยกว่า จำนวนหรือตัวเลขที่กล่าวเพียงเล็กน้อย
ข้อสังเกต
ในภาษาเขียน ชอบที่จะใช้ Approximately แทน

คำที่มีความหมายใกล้เคียงและแนวทางการใช้
Approximate = ความหมายเหมือน About แต่ใช้เป็นทางการมากกว่า และใช้โดยเฉพาะในงานเขียน

Roughly = ใช้เมื่อพยายามให้บางคนรับทราบโดยเคร่าๆถึงขนาด – จำนวน ของบางสิ่ง

Around = เกี่ยวกับจำนวน หรือเวลา ใช้เมื่อเป็นการคาดเดา
ตัวอย่าง
-I’ll be there around 5 o’clock.
-ITV broadcasts around 50 documentaries per year.
Somewhere/something in the region of = ใช้เป็นทางการ - กับจำนวนหรือเงินจำนวนมาก
ตัวอย่าง
-It cost somewhere in the region of 5,000,000 Baht to train a new doctor.
-Last year he earned something in the region of 50 million Baht.
Or so = ใช้แบบไม่เป็นทางการ – หลังห้วงเวลาหนึ่ง หรือจำนวนหนึ่ง
ตัวอย่าง
-The journey takes about an hour or so.
-The baby usually sleeps for an hour or so after breakfast.
-He suggested that I take a week or so off work.
Circa = ใช้เป็นทางการ หมายถึง ประมาณ – ในราว ใช้กับวันที่ในอดีตผ่านมาเป็นเวลานาน เขียนนำหน้า คศ โดยมักเขียนย่อ c., ca., cir., circ., หรือ C.. หน้าปี)
ตัวอย่าง
-The house was built circa 1530.
Or more = ใช้ต่อท้าย ตัวเลขหรือ จำนวนเงิน
ตัวอย่าง
-A thirty-second commercial can cost 100,000 Baht or more.
Upwards of = มากกว่า - ตัวเลขหรือจำนวนเงิน
ตัวอย่าง
-The aircraft can carry upwards of 400 passengers.
