กบ เขียด คางคก ปาด อึ่ง(อ่าง)

I read in G2K about using 'เขียด' to make a toddler talk and I wondered how do Thais tell the different amphibians which are what. I looked up (see below) and see that Thais are (as have been) much more discerning about frogs and toads than English. The question is then "Do we really know which is what?" or "How do we tell the differences among them?"

Can anyone help me here?  Give detailed description, habits and ... Post pictures with names, ...

This could be a start of the Thai encyclopedia on Thai Amphibians ;-)

กบ

กบ ๒: น. ชื่อสัตว์สี่เท้าสะเทินนํ้าสะเทินบกในวงศ์ Ranidae ไม่มีหาง ตีนแบนมีหนังติดเป็นพืด กระโดดได้ไกล ว่ายนํ้าดํานํ้าได้เร็ว มักวางไข่ในนํ้า เมื่อยังเป็นตัวอ่อนจะมีหาง อยู่ในนํ้าเรียกว่า ลูกอ๊อด ภายหลังจึงงอกขา หางหดหายไป แล้วขึ้นอาศัยบนบก หน้าแล้งอยู่แต่ในรู ไม่ออกหาอาหารชั่วคราว เรียกว่า กบจําศีล มีหลายชนิด เช่น กบนา ( Rana tigerina ).

เขียด: น. ชื่อสัตว์สี่เท้าสะเทินนํ้าสะเทินบกในวงศ์ Ranidae ซึ่งเป็นวงศ์เดียวกับกบแต่มักมีขนาดเล็กกว่า ในประเทศไทยมีหลายชนิด เช่น เขียดอ๋อง Rana nigrovittata เขียดหลังขาว R. limnocharis.

คางคก

คางคก ๑: น. ชื่อสัตว์สี่เท้าสะเทินนํ้าสะเทินบกในวงศ์ Bufonidae รูปร่างคล้ายกบ ผิวหนังเป็นตุ่มขรุขระ เคลื่อนที่โดยการย่างเดินและกระโดดหย่ง ๆ ในประเทศไทยมีหลายชนิด เช่น คางคกบ้าน (Bufo melanostictus) คางคกป่า (B. macrotis).

อึ่ง

อึ่ง: น. ชื่อสัตว์สี่เท้าสะเทินนํ้าสะเทินบกหลายชนิดในวงศ์ Microhylidae รูปร่างอ้วนป้อมและมักพองตัวได้ เช่น อึ่งอ่าง (Kaloula pulchra) อึ่งแว่น (Calluella guttulata).

ปาด

ปาด ๒: น. ชื่อสัตว์สี่เท้าสะเทินนํ้าสะเทินบก ในวงศ์ Rhacophoridae รูปร่างคล้ายเขียดแต่อาศัยอยู่ตามต้นไม้ ปลายนิ้วแบนช่วยในการเกาะ ทํากองฟองวางไข่ตามกิ่งไม้ชายนํ้า มีหลายชนิด เช่น ชนิด Rhacophorus leucomystax ซึ่งพบทั่วไป, ปาดบิน (R. nigropalmatus), เขียดตะปาด ก็เรียก.

Yesterday while growing durian tree, I saw an อึ่งอ่าง. I usualy hear เสียงกบร้อง from my big pond. When I take a bath, I am disturbed by a ปาด very often. I sometime see a เขียด at my big pond, and a คางคก somewhere in the garden. I will try to help you by posting pictures with names ok those amphibians.

Thank you ไอดิน-กลิ่นไม้ I wait to see the pictures. I had tried to grow Durians for years, They just wilted and went in Winter when the temperature dropped below 5C. All frogs and toads around my place go into hiding too in the cold seasons. Happy gardening?

Yes, they are. But do we know how many genuses, species, habitats, foods, propagation, ....?

I wish we have little scientists out there running around taking notes, pictures, posting what they find (on G2K kids zone? ;-), ...

We will see about some sorts of encouragement systems to promote "kidz sciences". Leave it to MOE as we have done until now, we see now what MOE had done to our kids (each new generation have less IQ than the previous generations). soon, our kids will be reduced to 'zombies'.

 Here are pictures of some amphabians with names in Thai I have searched through internet for you.

You said, you had tried to grow Durians for years. They just wilted and went in Winter when the temperaturedropped below 5C." So does the Farm Idin-Klinmai’s manager. He grows a durian tree every year, for each went every summer. The one I have grown is the seventh with my hope of growing durian successfully..

I haven't seen the pictures yet. My Internet connection is losing out to the slowest snail in AUS (again shame, BIGPOND AUS, shame).

There is a secret 'start' button on durian trees somewhere, we haven't found and pressed yet. Where I am durian seedlings are expensive ($25+ per tree), I cannot afford them now. I go back to getting more varieties of mangoes, guavas, cassavas, chillies, that sort of things. They are much easy to grow. And they even rock (look active) in Winter.

ปาด บางถิ่นเรียก กะปาด ตัวเพรียว ลื่น ผิวเรียบกว่าเขียด ตีนมีปุ่ม นิ้วแยกกว้าง ชอบกระโดดเกาะต้นไม้ หรือถ้าเข้ามาในบ้านก็เกาะผนัง เกาะตัวคนก็มี เกาะแล้วติดแน่น (ไม่ทราบว่าปาดร้องยังไง เคยมีเพื่อนชื่อเล่นว่าปาด ความหมายบ่งบอกว่า ตัวผอมๆ)
