  • Frequently Asked Questions for Out of State and International Students Applying to the Pharm.D. Program

  • Do I need to complete the CORE/FLAG course requirements?

If The University of Texas recognizes that you've earned a bachelor's (equivalent bachelor's) degree, you will be waived any core/flag course requirements still lacking upon matriculation into the Pharm.D. program.

If you do not have a bachelor's (equivalent bachelor's) degree, then you will need to complete all core/flag course requirements (please read carefully) for The University of Texas at Austin in order to receive your Pharm.D. degree.

  • What is the non-residence tuition per semester?

Tuition for non-resident students can be found at the following link.  Please make sure you click on the "Professional (excluding Law) Tuition" link.

  • Is financial assistance/financial aid available for international students?

Information on financial assistance can be located through Student Financial Services site:   http://finaid.utexas.edu/process/international.html

Upon reading the information at the above site, you can email our financial aid liaison, Mr. Miguel Wasielewski: [email protected] if you have additional financial assistance questions.  Please indicate in your email that you are interested in admissions into the PharmD program and whether you have or do not have a prior bachelors (or equivalent bachelors from abroad) degree.

  • If I have a foreign pharmacy degree that isn't equivalent to a Pharm.D. degree, can I take a reduced number of years to complete my pharmacy education for the Pharm.D. degree?

No.  UT Austin College of Pharmacy requires that you complete all fours years of the Pharm.D. curriculum in-residence.

  • If I have a foreign bachelors degree, can any of the pre-pharmacy prerequisite courses that I'm still lacking be waived?

No.  All applicants to UT Austin College of Pharmacy must complete all pre-pharmacy prerequisite courses despite having a prior bachelor's degree.  This may require you to go back and complete a few freshman/sophomore level courses.

  • Am I required to take the TOEFL exam?

You will be required to take the TOEFL exam and submit the results to PharmCAS when you apply to pharmacy school if you do not meet the qualifications stated at the following site by The University of Texas at Austin:http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/international/transfer/testing

Applicants from the English-only speaking countries indicated on the following site do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score:http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/international/transfer/testing

  • I am a practicing pharmacist in my native country.  I want to be licensed in Texas.  What should I do?

You may follow one of two options to become a licensed pharmacist in Texas.

    1. Contact the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission(FPGEE), the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), andTexas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) for information on examinations, additional internship hours, and other requirements.
    2. Earn the Pharm.D. degree from a college pharmacy program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and pass the North American Pharmacists Licensure Examination (NAPLEX®) and the Texas Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE®).
Requirements for licensure in other states may be found by contacting those states' boards of pharmacy.

I am an international student from Vietnam. I just recently got accepted to Ohio State 3 days after my interview...I'm so happy cuz Ohio State PHarm is one of the famous one in the US.

My stats: BS Biochemistry & BA Chemistry
    GPA: 3.67
    Toefl: 98/120
    PCAT: 72 percentile
1 year of research + 1 year of volunteering in Pharm store

    hi all,

I finished my BS in Biochem at CSULB, cali.

    my advise is that:

if you an int'l student adn have an average gpa, not have something special, should apply to private schools....

If you think you're special, apply big, public school.

I never think that Ohio state will accept me
usually, most of private schools take in int'l students...such as USC, USN, Western, Nova, ...

But they require your bank or financial statement to prove that you can afford the cost of one year or even the whole 4 years...(depends on school and year)
I got it as Canadian (got accepted 2 days ago) into the University of Southern Nevada. I was on the wait list for a while as top 30 but got in finally.

My stats 3.8 gpa with all the prereq's for the school itself. I had no PCAT, no bachelor's degree. But, I killed the interview .

First of all in my opinion all international students can get into pharmacy schools.
I got acceptance letters from Texas tech, mercer university, UH and possibly UT Austin (withdrew interview).
Got interviews at incarnate word and OU.

My pcat was 84% gpa 3.81(cummulative BS in CS).
Did volunteer work for the sake of it. Shadowed a pharmacist for 30 approximately hrs(exaggerated).

The point is guys, it is harder for international students but if you are determined, if you prepare well for the interview, send thank you notes, you will get in. So please lets stop this B.S. which totally drove me into depression when I applied to pharmacy schools and be optimistic and hard working.

    Foreign Students and Graduates

    Non-U.S. Students

    Admission Restrictions for Non-U.S. Applicants

The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program in the United States requires at least 2-years of specific pre-professional (undergraduate) coursework followed by 4-academic years (or 3-calendar years) of professional study. The B.S. of pharmacy degree is no longer offered in the U.S. The pharmacy admission process is highly competitive for all applicants.

Some U.S. pharmacy institutions do not consider international (non-U.S.) applicants for admission. Some U.S. pharmacy institutions give admission preference to applicants who live in the same state as the school. For these schools, international and out-of-state (non-resident) applicants may compete for a limited number of positions or may be ineligible for admission, depending on institutional and state policies. Private pharmacy institutions generally offer non-U.S. citizens a greater number of positions within the program as compared to state-supported, public institutions. Foreign citizens should visit the web site for each U.S. pharmacy school to determine if international (foreign) applicants are eligible for admission.

The majority of U.S. pharmacy degree programs require all applicants to apply through the Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS). The PharmCAS web site indicates whether the pharmacy school considers non-US citizens for admission.

The classes required for admission vary by pharmacy school. To obtain admission requirement information, visit the web site for each Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program. School specific information is also available in the AACP annual publication, "Pharmacy School Admission Requirements" (PSAR). The on-line version of the PSAR is available for free on the AACP web site.

If the U.S. institution considers non-U.S. citizens for admission, the applicant must meet the same minimum entry requirements as American students, including course prerequisites and standardized tests. Applicants who completed pre-pharmacy study outside the U.S. will be required to submit original foreign transcripts or acourse-by-course foreign transcript evaluation report, depending on school policy. Some pharmacy schools do not accept pre-pharmacy courses taken at a foreign institution.

If an applicant's primary language is not English, the pharmacy school may require the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Test of Spoken English (TSE), or another English language proficiency test as part of the admissions process. Non-U.S. citizens may be required to complete the pre-pharmacy courses in a U.S. accredited university.
