24 - More and more 'i o u' but 'y' (PSE)
We have said 'a' and listened to 'e'. They have left different tastes, feels and muscular twists in our mouth. For those who like to sound out 'i', 'o' and 'u' please make up a list of words with the wanted vowel, bring out a dictionary with audio features (like 'Wordweb') and go through the list with the speaker volume turned up. [It's would be good, to share your list on Gotoknow.org. -- I beg you.]
How do we say 'I'?
I say 'ไอ' most times, but 'อาย' (like 'eye') when I want to get attention on 'I'.
In words with 'i', we have
'อิ' as in 'it, bid, bin, bit, did, fit, gist, give, hid, his, hit, jitter, kin, lid, lit, mit, nit, quid, quit, ...;
'ไอ' as in bind, cite, dice, die, dike, either, fire, five, hire, hive, jibe, kite, knife, light, lime, line, mite, night, ... ; and
'เออ' as in birth, dirt, fir, first, girl, mirth, ...
Note 1. 'anti-' and 'semi-' sound like 'แอนไท" and 'เซไม' in USA but 'แอนติ' (or 'แอนตี') and 'เซมิ' elsewhere. But if you think that is easy "i sounds ไอ" in USA, think again. In USA, they say ออโตโมบิวลึ for automobile and โมบิวลึ โฟน for mobilephone. And วิตามิน or ไวตามิน for vitamin...

[This is for you to share with your buddies.]
How do we say 'Y'?
[This is for you to share with your buddies.]
OMG (Oh my God) did you say that?
Please share your how-to-read lists.
Why 'you'? Why not a simple 'U'?
Please tell the world what u think.
Why is 'y' funny?
Did we hear that? 'y' sounds like 'อาย' in one place and sounds like 'อี' in another place even in the same word! hydrology, psychology, my oh my I envy you, a lullaby (ลัลลาบาย) for a baby, that spy is creepy, ...
['I O U' (IOU) is a popular short term for "I owe You".
Governments' main income is from taxes (see ภาษา ภาษี (สุ)ภาษิต http://www.gotoknow.org/blogs/posts/481305). Tax money is to be used to provide secuity, infrastructures and services to ALL people -- that is the original (ideal or common) definition. When governments spend more than the tax (income), they must borrow to balance the book (account). More often, governments borrow by 'issueing government bonds' (printing and selling IOUs) to banks and people. IOUs say 'this government promises to pay the holders of IOUs the amount of ... (with interest) on a certain date'. So, Governments must find extra money to pay for IOUs. Most governments raise old taxes or make laws to collect new taxes or borrow more to pay back (the nation's debts are people's debts -- not "the" goverments' or ministers' debts). We can see where we are going if we get deeper and deeper in debt and we cannot raise our income to pay back. Nations in debts are going the same way.
(Thai, US,...) government after government had issued more and more IOUs to pay for increase in businesses (or economy) and increase in employment. So that more taxes could be collected to pay for these IOUs.
Sometimes, (stock) markets and value of money in chains of (hedge/speculative) transactions make IOUs (or government bonds) seem more valuable. But, sometimes, governments sell off (or privatize) the nations' assets like land, fishing rights, mining rights, communication frequency rights, ... The people of course lose those sold-off assets (rights) and opportunities to use those assets. (Beaches are blocked off from public access; ocean fish (ปลาทู ซาร์ดีน ...) are scooped out by trans-national trawlers before they get to spawning areas (see >>> หยุด ฆ่า แม่ปลา <<< http://www.gotoknow.org/blogs/posts/474661); ... ]
