Do the numerals XL in the title of this Sport English surprise you? Do you think that XL stand for Extra Large as used for the enormous size of clothes? You are wrong if you think that way.
Actually, XL are Roman numerals : X=10, L = 50; together, they have a meaning of 40. The XL or 40th National Games will come to Khon Kaen during 27 November – 7 December 2011. The National Games were last held here during 12 – 18 July 1992, or 19 years ago. A long-time waiting finally ends with the coming of the National Games.
Let’s talk briefly about the history of National Games. The former name of the Games was Regional Games, held for the first time in Bangkok during 1-5 November 1967. The 17th Regional Games held in Phitsanulok were the last, then came the 18th National Games with the new name, in Chiang Rai during 20-26 January 1985.
The National Games are held annually. Last year, they were held in Chonburi(2010); this year in Khon Kaen(2011); next year in Chiang Mai(2012). You can notice that the Games are rotated among the nation’s regions: the North, the Northeast, the Central, the East and South. Among the past 39 games, Bangkok has held the most with 3 times.
