Effects of Mass Tourism on Thailand

Attention please!

          บทความนี้เขียนขึ้นเพื่อใช้ประกอบการเรียน General Writing IV ซึ่งอาจารย์จะให้หัวข้อเรื่องมาเขียนทุกสัปดาห์  (อย่างกะโจทย์เพลงประจำสัปดาห์ของบ้าน AF เลยครับ)  อย่างไรก็ตาม เนื่องจากเป็นการเขียนเพื่อการฝึกหัด ดังนั้นจึงอาจยังมีข้อบกพร่องในเรื่องแนวคิดได้ในหลาย ๆ จุด ซึ่งผมขอน้อมรับคำติชมและความคิดเห็นต่าง ๆ ไว้เพื่อการปรับปรุงต่อไปครับ

          อนึ่ง ความคิดเห็นต่าง ๆ ที่สอดแทรกอยู่ในบทความนั้นเป็นความคิดเห็นส่วนตัวของผมทั้งสิ้น (ซึ่งขอบอกตรง ๆ ครับว่า บางครั้งผมก้อไม่ได้คิดอย่างนั้นหรอก แต่ไม่รู้จะเขียนอะไรดี เพราะไม่มีไอเดียจริง ๆ ครับ) หากท่านไม่เห็นด้วย ท่านสามารถแสดงความคิดเห็นได้ แต่โปรดอย่าวิพากษ์ว่าความคิดเห็นใดถูกหรือผิด ดีหรือไม่ดี เพราะต่างคนก้อคงต่างความคิด  นานาจิตตังครับ

Effects of mass tourism on Thailand

            Compared to the past, tourism industry in Thailand is more popular by the force from both government and private sectors. Due to the varieties of tourist attractions and the distinctive culture, foreigners like to visit Thailand, the gate to Asia. Mass tourism has changed Thailand in many ways; some of these have had positive effects, while the rest have been negative.

            There are a lot of positive effects from foreigners visiting Thailand. The tourism industry brings in a lot of money to Thailand because tourists spend money on fares, food, admission and service fees. Souvenirs are sold to tourists during their journey. Profits from shopping circulate within Thailand. Thailand not only gains income from tourism but also from associated services, e.g. dental care and spas. Since Thailand is famous for cheap and well-qualified dentists, an increasing number of tourists plan to see dentists during their trips in Thailand which results in additional money being spent here. Due to the popularity of tourism, more jobs will be created. More people will be hired which will help improve the quality of life of Thais and our economy.

            Along with positive effects, there are several drawbacks from mass tourism which should be carefully considered. As a result of too many people visit natural parks, especially in high season, these places are being damaged. Another unavoidable problem from having lots of people is garbage. Since this waste is foreign to those places, it is not good for the ecology. Furthermore, the garbage may also decrease the value of those places. It looks unsightly to see garbage in clear rivers, in blue seas, on white sand beaches, and on green farmlands. Strict laws must be devised in order to prevent littering and to punish people for this anti-social behavior. In rural areas which are promoted as cultural tourist attractions, villagers’ traditional ways of living may be disturbed. Most visitors would like to see authentic examples of our culture and way of life. To make or alter it for commercial reasons might be counter-productive. Instead of farmers undertaking agricultural work, they may stay at home waiting for tourists who may want to see how they live, and may want to take photographs of them.

            In conclusion, because of mass tourism, which has boomed recently, Thailand has changed in many ways. Although there are lots of good effects from tourism, the drawbacks should not be overlooked. Maintaining good natural tourist places and traditional ways of life is as important as money we get from tourists.
