Into the forest Cafe กระบี่🍽 ร้านนี้จะมีทั้งอาหารคาวและขนมหวานเยอะแยะมากมาย วันนี้ไปทานเฉพาะขนมหวาน มีให้เลือกเยอะ รสชาติดี🌲 มุมถ่ายรูปที่ต้องไปโดนเลยคือข้างหน้าร้าน ออกแบบมาได้สวยมาก แต่ภายในร้านก็สวยไม่แพ้กันนะคะ ในร้านร่มรื่น มีพื้นที่เยอะ เหมาะสำหรับมานั่งชิลๆได้เลย

Online Gambling (available from websites all over the world –including illegal sites in Thailand and over Thailand’s borders) is impacting lives of gamblers and families and society (we have not ‘officially’ collected data on how gambling is related narcotic drugs and to what extent, but) news of crimes stemming from gambling are littering the media. How much are gambling debts (among the registered and unregistered debts)? Again, we don’t know (as there is no ‘official’ study on gambling debts.)

Are our children learning online gambling (more than STEM) or other more useful life skills online courses? And the super agers?

(A new series on life issues in this year) Example 5:
Multi-cultural communities are common in Thailand far back in history (migration due to conflicts –including forced migration of skilled workers after wars) and today (due to economic conditions). Historical views can be very controversial (and rooted in ‘economic interests) and perhaps best be diplomatically avoided.

Living harmoniously in multi-cultural setting demands tolerance of differences in beliefs (traditions, religions, political affiliation,…), individual personal tastes, styles, mannerisms and looks (due to genetic combinations and cosmetics), and languages.

Multiple languages will require also attitudes and skills (mentality and brain), are we up to this yet? Our record on languages: Thai and other second languages (offered in schools)is not very good.

2023 was the hottest year on record.
2024 is expected to be the hotter year – to break that (2023) record and all future years are set to break the record of the previous years.

Not everyone can stay and work in climate controlled (air-conditioned) environment. Shades give some relief from the Sun. Moist air movements (winds) can lower the heat if there is some cooler mass of air nearby (hot lighter air rises up and colder heavier air flows in). Ways of cooling are urgently needed.

Electric fans push air about (ceiling fans push air downwards, floor/tabletop fans push air sideways), mixing cooler air with hotter air, so can only get somewhere in between. No cooler than ‘ambient’ (environmental) air. Adding water sprays to absorb heat would give cooler air but using more energy to make sprays. Using more energy means more CO2 and hotter world.

Redesigning buildings, landscapes for better air flows are ideal but won’t solve the problems now . Can we modify our house and whatever we can to get some reliefs for now? This is our challenge. It is the challenge for some 90% of people of the world. Cooling ourselves because our health and wellbeing depend on temperature. The survival of humanity needs cooling technologies.

Generative AI is now popular and the global market value of AI is expected to surpass search engines, social media + advertising, and many new technology endeavors by many tens of billion US dollars. (The costs of running AIs are also very high.) Many people are worried about AI robots taking over some human jobs. (Businesses an industries always look for ways to save costs, when ‘AIbots’ can cut cost or improve revenue, they will be used.)

AIs are trained on historic data (collected, selected, modified, verified, categorized,.. ) – of facts (meaning data about things of the past ). AIs often fail math and fail projection (prediction of the future). AI generated code (software programs) can include deprecated (obsolete) instructions. For AI generated reports/comments, history adds context and perspectives, but in some health and education areas/applications, the generated materials can exclude ‘better and up-to-date’ data.

Ais demand users to learn and validate more, to exercise better judgment , and to observe the ancient Kalama-sutta (think before believe) more.

(A new series on life issues in this year) Example 2: Electric Vehicles
EVs on average are heavier than internal combustion engine (ICE) powered vehicles of the same size. The battery is the reason. On average, EV batteries weigh about 450kg, but most weigh over 900kg for more power/longer distance between charges.

This means EVs waste more energy on moving themselves (than passengers). More weight means more momentum - harder to stop, more serious injury or damages on collisions. And as EV motors are much quieter than ICE, drivers often fail to notice the speed.
–Climate control [aircon] systems take 3-4kW to run equivalent of 11km/h for air, 8km/h for heater.

A typical EV battery has about 8 kg of lithium, 14 kg of cobalt, and 20 kg of manganese. (But a Tesla Model S’ battery, contains around 62.6 kg of lithium. On average, about 60 to 75 percent of a battery’s total weight comes from the cells and the materials they contain, while the remaining 25 to 40 percent is made up of the battery’s metal casing, cables, and thermal and battery management systems (TMS and BMS). [As at Jan6, 2024 Lithium carbonate USD78K/metric ton, Cobalt USD46,900/ton].

In all EVs are helpful steps but not the final solution to combating climate change.

Every time a driver brakes, accelerates or turns a corner, car tyres wear down into small particles – polluting air, water and soil. Tyre dust gets blown up by winds and traffic (into our lungs), washed by rains into rivers and seas. Tyre dust like other fine particles may cause health problems like cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD), cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Road transport is a major (significant) cause of climate change, air pollution, deaths and destruction of environment.

Isn’t time we look at the way we live now and how we can do better?

Reading this ศึกถกร่าง พ.ร.บ.งบฯ 67 ‘ก้าวไกล’ vs ‘รัฐบาลเศรษฐา’ วิกฤตแบบใด https://www.thaipost.net/dominate-the-situation-news/511323/ ..[government wants to print] เอกสารในรูปแบบกระดาษ.. ซึ่งสุดท้ายรัฐบาลก็ยอมส่งร่าง พ.ร.บ.งบฯ 67 ทั้งฉบับในรูปแบบไฟล์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ จำนวนกว่า 25,000 หน้า ให้กับฝ่ายค้าน แต่การที่ส่งมาเป็นไฟล์ PDF ทำให้กลุ่ม ก้าว Geek ต้องร่วมกับภาคประชาสังคมอย่าง WeVis แปลงเป็นไฟล์ Excel เพื่อให้สามารถจำแนกข้อมูลได้ง่ายที่สุด แต่ก็เสียเวลาไปอีก 2 วัน ส่งผลให้เหลือเวลาวิเคราะห์จริงๆ แค่ 5 วันเท่านั้น ..งบฯ 67 ถูกเริ่มจัดสรรตั้งแต่รัฐบาลประยุทธ์ จำนวน 3.35 ล้านล้านบาท แต่ในรัฐบาลเศรษฐามีการวางกรอบที่เริ่มต้นใหม่ตั้งแต่ศูนย์ เป็นจำนวน 3.48 ล้านล้านบาท ..ทำให้หลายคนตั้งข้อสังเกตว่า งบประมาณที่เพิ่มขึ้นนั้นจะถูกนำไปใช้ในส่วนใด เพราะเนื้อหาภายในแทบไม่ต่างจากเดิมเลย ในรายละเอียดคำของบประมาณเองก็ไม่ค่อยมีโครงการใหม่ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นโครงการที่ทำมาอย่างต่อเนื่องอยู่แล้ว..

One would wonder when the content of Budget 2567 is very much an edited version of Budget 2567 prepared in 2566 – little new projects nor initiatives but cut to Health and rise in Defence expenditures – should take a long time to be release and when released should be in the form that hinders analyses.

Is the government working harder to prevent others working smarter?

The Days of my Life

Today is somewhat special for me though I cannot see any things our of ordinary yet. I got up before 4AM, sat down on my favorite chair, looked out of the window and saw that it was a beautiful dawn. The air was just nice 24C. The winds was very gentle and freshening. There was peaceful silence and calmness in the surrounding. I felt quiet joy to be a part of this moment in space-time.

I have lived for 25,931 days - a longest record for me. Not all those days were as joyous. I looked around me, at pictures and memorabilia that marked some of those days and realized that they were very few. Less than 0.1% were really memorable days in life.

I could do with a change, a challenge and an opportunity that a New Year has to offer, but I would do a day at a time as I face it. I wish I could start each day like today, though.

African Risen

[In AUS, there are TV broadcast news programs from many countries like France 24, Thai PBS, … and Deutsche Welle (DW, Germany) with an “Afrimaxx” (above African countries) section. ScienceMag (USA) website has this Would life be better as a robot? https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/scirobotics.adn0643 as (a review of) good examples of development in 21C.]

“The Blue House” by Dilman Dila, the story of a robot, Cana-B70, searching alone for replacement parts amid a desert with temperatures ranging from very hot during the day to very cold at night. A catastrophe, the Great Burn, has transformed Earth’s environment into something more akin to that of Mars. As Cana-B70 malfunctions, her attention shifts from the time-consuming mechanics of survival to examining the contents of a hidden file, organic.sys. The file contains her childhood memories before being lovingly uploaded with her family into robot bodies. The majority of citizens has uploaded themselves, although some are too poor to become androids and others refuse because of religious objections. A few more resist in protest over using technology as a solution to a problem they believe was induced by technology. Just before Cana-B70 goes into an unrecoverable failure mode, she discovers a blue house similar to her childhood home that contains a beautiful oasis of vegetation growing from the fertile remains of human bodies. Perhaps those bodies are the recycled husks of her and her family or the deliberate sacrifice of those who refused uploading; regardless, their collective biological legacy will outlive the individual mechanical robot bodies that were promised to extend life.
