Thank you "พี่หนาน" for that info and url, I blogged about that in ราชบัณฑิตย พูดอังกิดแบบไทยๆ  http://www.gotoknow.org/posts/510504 some months ago. I think the proposal was voted down and the explanation was "it is Thai, we do what we like". So, etynology for Thai language is a very rich field.
