We went to see a stand-up for mental health last night at Granville Island Art Club Theatre
It was a fundraising event where they will use the money to organise a workshop for individuals diagnosed with mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar, obsessive-compulsive, depression to deal with their life through comedy.
Like Aj. Brahm often said, laughters cure. They trained these people for a year to reframe their life situation and make it their materials for stand-up comedy. I really admire them both the counselor and the so called patients. These patient though are like you and me, If they didn't tell us they had mental illness, we wouldn't know. They were great on stage too.
Some of them were suffered from anxiety and never speak in public or even socialise..and look at them last night, they were great as a stand-up comic. There were 12 of them locally and there's another famous comic (Canadian) but he's based in L.A. (He was diagnosed for bipolar.)
Jes and I had a ton of good laughters last night.
By the way, this group fo people is the subject of an upcoming CBC "Passionate Eye" documentary to be aired in the fall of 2006
