Six steps for establishing effective leadership
D K Bakshi
Synergising people, or working together towards a common end, is a competence which leaders must exhibit regularly. Those who possess this quality of connecting, leveraging and establishing a mode of synergic approach become highly successful leader and get the best out of people's competencies and capabilities.
Having been in the human-resources profession for two decades, I always find people scoring very high on their own personal competencies; but when scored on interpersonal competencies, their rating falls significantly. This is where we have issues of people getting into clashes and creating a situation of "I win, you lose" instead of "win-win" . It is therefore essential for effective leaders to address the issue of synergising before creating a leadership model within an organisation, community or country.
I would summarise some of the key steps as follows:
Step I: Building leadership bridges. It is well said that "relationships are the real bridges that connect authentic self-expression to creating value" . Let us understand and agree on the fact that leadership is not self-expression for its own sake; it is self-expression that makes a difference and enriches the live of others. Leadership is not about sitting in your office and dreaming up strategy; it is about touching the organisation through personal presence and relationship with others.
