ว่า นักวิจารณ์บางราย ให้เหตุผลว่า เมื่อใช้เป็น บุพบท
“ควรให้คงมีความแตกต่างอย่างชัดเจน ระหว่าง สองคำนี้”
โดยอ้างว่า ควรใช้ “beside” แต่เพียงให้หมายถึง “at the side of”
หรือ “next to it” เช่น
‘There was no one in the seat beside me.’
‘Beside the shed was a huge tree.’
‘I sat down beside my wife.’
และ ใช้ “besides” เป็น Preposition
ในความหมายว่า “in addition to” หรือ “except for” หรือ “as well as” เช่น
‘Besides replacing the back stairs, she fixed the broken banister.’
‘No one besides Smitty would say a thing like that.’
‘What language do you know besides Arabic and English?’
‘There was only one person besides Jacque who knew Lorraine.’

ข้อควรระวัง
ในประโยค เช่นนี้ ต้องใช้ กริยา รูป “-ing”
เช่น อย่ากล่าวว่า 'He writes novels and poems besides he works as a journalist'.
และ ใช้ “besides” เป็น adverb
สามารถใช้ besides เมื่อต้องการเสริม สิ่งที่เห็นว่า สำคัญ เช่น
‘I'll only be gone for five days, and besides, you'll have fun while I'm away.’
‘The house was too big. Besides, we couldn't afford it.’
