บางคน “ให้การอนุญาต” เพื่อทำบางสิ่ง หรือ

“มิได้ กีดกันขัดวาง มิให้ ทำบางสิ่ง”

โดยเลือก “PERMIT” เมื่อใช้ “เป็นทางการ”

เมื่อใช้ “allow” หรือ “permit”

ต้องตามด้วย “กรรม” และ infinitive “to”

‘He allowed me to take the course.’

‘They do not permit student to use calculators in exams.’

สามารถบอกผู้คนว่า

พวกเขา “are not allowed” หรือ

“are not permitted” ที่จะทำบางสิ่ง

“Visitors are not allowed to take photographs in the museum.’

“Children are not permitted to use the swimming pool.’

สามารถ กล่าวว่า

บางสิ่ง “is not allowed” หรือว่า “is not permitted”

‘Running was not allowed in the school.’

‘Picnic are not permitted in the park.’

เมื่อใช้ “let” ตามด้วย “กรรม” และ infinitive “to” เช่น

‘Let me go to the party on Saturday. I won’t be late.’

ตาม ปกติ ไม่ใช้ “let” ในประโยค “passive” เช่น

ไม่ใช้ว่า “She was let go to the party.”

ระวัง อย่าสับสน คำข้างต้น กับ “enable”

การจะ “enable” “บางคน ให้ทำบางสิ่ง” หมายถึง

“เปิดโอกาส ให้เขา” ได้ทำ สิ่งนั้น

มิได้ “หมายความว่า” “ให้การอนุญาต” ให้ทำได้ เช่น

‘Contraception enable women to plan their families.’

‘The new test should enable doctors to detect the disease early.’
