Plain and Simple English Talks (7)

Learning by (making) Patterns

We think of patterns as design patterns: pictures, drawings, logos, icons, bricks, hexagons, and so on. We also have patterns in languages - the ways we say things. We call these audio patterns common [phrases], 'idioms', collocations, grammar rules, 'slang',... Sometimes, we use many kinds of patterns like audio patterns and 'gestures' at the same time. For examples: we say 'No.' and shake our head at the same time; we say 'Welcome.' then smile; we raise a hand and say 'Please...'; and so on.

Children learn a language from their parents. They learn by listening, watching, and repeating sounds and gestures. We may learn another language in the same way. So far we have been reading or looking (text) patterns. We will be able to read and write. But we will not be able to listen and talk. We can see that we must listen and talk. How do we do that?

How do we make patterns?

We have several types of words: [pronoun]; [verb]; [adjective]; [adverb]; [preposition];... We have made lists of common words in types. We have learned many [phrases] with {[pronoun] [verb] [preposition]} pattern. We can see that [phrases] are made of a word from [pronoun] words, a word from [verb] words, a word from [preposition] words,...

If we write down each word on our lists on a card. We put our word cards in different boxes. We label our boxes [pronoun], [verb], and so on. Our lists of words are made into our boxes of cards. Now we can play games.

Let us make a list of common [noun] words:

time year day week month

person man woman child boy girl baby

thing place point part way road street world car bus 'tuk tuk'

life hand eye foot head hair shoes hat glasses

work point case company number group problem group

*** We know more [noun] words. Let us add them to our list.

PSE Drill 3.a

Pick up a few cards from a few boxes. Read each card aloud and put it back the right box.

PSE Drill 3.b

Pick up [pronoun] box, [verb] box and [preposition] box and put them down side by side in this order [pronoun] [verb] [preposition]. Next pick one card (or word) from each box and put it in front of the box. So now we have words from [pronoun], [verb], and [preposition].

Read the cards in that order. Can we understand the [phrase]?

Look up a dictionary or the Internet to see what it means.

Ask our friends to repeat what we have just said. ("Please, say that back to me.")

Return all cards to their own boxes.

Find or make other patterns and repeat the drill.

Note. We now have a Plain and Simple English (PSE) machine. This machine can make plain and simple English phrases that we can use to learn and talk English. We can add more words to these boxes. We can select and arrange some boxes in some orders to make patterns. We may make new patterns that soon people like and use often. The new patterns then become 'common' patterns. We can extend PSE machine into a more powerful English machine by adding more words and by using more patterns as we learn more. Practice makes Perfect!

Have fun and make new patterns.
