There are several meanings or ways to use 'ask'. For examples:
He asks about you. = He wants to know about you (how you are doing).
She asked directions to the school. = She wanted directions to the school.
I asked him for a loan. = I requested a loan from him.
Is it not asking too much from the girls? = is it not more than the girls can do?
...
So 'ask' can be used for other meanings not just for 'question' (as in 'ask a question').
