Inspired by Indian textiles from the collection of National Museums  and also local museums in Thailand, a  Thai  scholar decided  to  go searching  more about  the textiles in India.  In quest of Indian textiles for Thai Market  will tell you  what  have  been found  in India and  how they can be connected  to Thai  history  and culture. 

            Indian textiles used by  the Thais  were mentioned and depicted in the historical accounts and  arts  during Ayutthaya and Bangkok periods. They include  chintz or calico, brocade , ikat , embroidery etc.  Temples’ mural paintings , ancient books,  and old photos  show how  Indian textiles were used in  Thai context.  Dawoodi Bohra, a shiite muslim community  from  Gujarat  in  western India was among  textile dealers  imported Indian textiles known as  Saudagiri  to Thailand  from early Bangkok period until World War II.  Maskati  was the most popular agent in importing the chintz or Pha Lai .  The decline of Indian textiles after World War II  led to manufacturing of  Pha Lai Thai  or  Thai Chintz  by  Thai  producers  which has been used as part of  Thai  traditional costume until today.
