เรียนรู้คำไทย "มหาด"
There are 2 "มหาด" words in Modern Thai: มหาดเล็ก and มหาดไทย. Back in Ayuddhaya “มหาดอาษา” was also in use. There are many possible and interesting etymologies. Here is my note:
มหาดเล็ก

มะหาด
[Wikipedia] ...Artocarpus lacucha, also known as Monkey Jack (Thai: มะหาด), is a tropical evergreen tree species of the Moraceae family.[1] It is distributed throughout the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The tree is valued for its wood; its fruit is edible and is believed to have medicinal value.[2]
The stilbenoid oxyresveratrol can be isolated from the heartwood of A. lakoocha[3] as well as in Puag Haad, the light brown powder obtained from the aqueous extract of the wood chips of A. lakoocha Roxb by boiling, then slow evaporation, followed by cooling. This traditional drug is effective against the intestinal fluke Haplorchis taichui[4] or against taeniasis.[5]
This tree is mentioned in the Arthashastra.[6]...

I looked up the word "mahadayā" (มหาทะยา--มหาดไทย?) in the Digital Pali Reader's dictionary. "maha": an orchestrated festival, a great affair,... and "dayā": sympathy, compassion, kindness,... "mahadayā": an orchestrated affair of compassion and kindness, -- a true meaning for 'public service'. What else could a government office be given a name of such characters but มหาดไทย and 'your' public health work?
