Drones of the New Era

Ukraine War brings up many new types and uses of drones in warfare. Other countries are awaken and now catching up. [Drone warfare is now a very intense area of research and experiments.]

High-powered weapons supplemented by drone-intelligence (and digital-signal processing) are now used as much if not more than ‘men carrying guns in the battle fields’. Outcomes of wars may now be determined by electronic and software engineers.

Questions on Thailand Defence Forces if they are [preparing] to meet the challenge and [putting in place training programmes] to develop defence capability in this 21st Century.

[Placing conscripted soldiers in menial work at homes of officers is not a way to build defence forces. It is dehumanizing, creating rebellious sentiment, and ruining their self-respect. Putting in training for life in digital environment is a far better development programme - for better outcome of the country. ]

Frauds and Corruption - Digitally

The angst (in my mind) is that software robots, AI and analytics are being used more and more in the background of our (human) activities. ‘Bot trading’ on stock markets is prevalent and the speed of transactions is well beyond human capability to monitor and/or to intervene. With many new stock market products ‘out of’ or ‘in grey’ areas of regulations, (new methods for) frauds, money laundering, and corruption can enter into the stock markets unnoticed and can operate at many hundreds transactions per second.

Do our fraud fighters have equal or better capability to monitor and to intervene in this digital world?

Every 3 years the PISA survey provides comparative data on 15-year-olds’ performance in reading, mathematics, and science. In addition, each cycle explores a distinct “innovative domain” such as Creative Thinking (PISA 2022) and Learning in the Digital World (PISA 2025).

Heart or Memory

COP28: Support for Victims

Well, it seems that the fight to cap climate change at its causes is no longer the goal of COP28. Now we are talking ‘compensation’ for victims (การเยียวยา). More details:

COP28 - 28 ปีของการช่วยโลก

COP (Conference of Parties - members of the UN Framework Conventions on Climate Change [UNFCCC] is holding its 28th yearly conference in Dubai UAE this year.

So we have had meetings after meetings but still the world is boiling. How much energy, time, money and human effort we have wasted in this procession of talks? And if CO2 is solely to blame, how much greenhouse gases are generated by these conferences? Jet travel is the the second major CO2 producer (after motor vehicles, with shipping third and wars/conflicts in roughly forth place, rocket launching is frog-leaping to join the ‘leaders’).

Commonsense says, the causes of Climate Change need to be addressed and reduced. So how do ‘we’ reduce travels and transports of imports-exports (tourism and consumerism)?

The world economies are increasingly depending on tourism and consumerism. Both of them are very much ‘ single use ‘ with a lot of ‘ plastic ‘ wrappings (‘waste’ that we pay for in the prices).

It seems that COP conferences are also ‘single use’ and we upgrade to another new model yearly!

I have been reading, listening and talking or writing about the current government push for 600K million Baht Loan for the 10K Baht Digital Wallet ‘economic stimulus project’ (perhaps ‘ election mandate ‘ may be a better word). I come to feel the awkwardness of expressing this เงินแจกหมื่นบาท name in both Thai and English. The media are not doing any better either. We have เงินดิจิทัล ใน ดิจิทัลวอลเลท, 10K DW digital money, 10K Give Away [digital] money,… all are mouthful to say and handful to write/type. It is already hard to talk about money, for non-cash like digital money it is harder.

What would be a good ‘nickname’ (acronym) for this [digital] money?
We want a word that tells about this new digital money in this government scheme and its value.I thought of a few candidates: like 10KDWM (10K Digital Wallet Money), 10KGAM (10K Give Away Money], … Then I looked at other digital moneys in the market like Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP(Ripple), EOS,… they are all one word and mean digital money of different types. So, I coined a few words like:

• Pheu-tang (เพื่อตัง) – the Pheu Thai Party would object to this word
• Wallet-tang(วอลเลต ตัง) – does not sound catchy nor meaningful
• เศรษฐัง (Sret-tang) – in honour of the scheme’s originator
• ดีบาท (digital Baht, dBaht) – sound OK but it is a mixed language word
• … what is your suggestion?

[It is less confusing and simpler to set [originally] : 1 dBaht = 1 Baht (in fiat money, cash)… ]

A 4 year-old asked if we can go and see a live T-Rex dinosaur.
After explanations like T-Rex lived in the time long before yesterday, T-Rex and and many other animals had a bad accident and died long before we were born - a ‘once upon a time’ story that doesn’t have a happy ending for the dinosaurs, but that’s good for us - human.

But, really? The questions “was there survivors of the ‘comet hit 65 million years ago’ theory?”, “how can we explain ‘evolution’ theories to children?”, “How do we rouse up curiosity so that it may drive children learning and development?”, …

Raining Hopes

After 7 months of drought [Down-under where we live], dry Autumn, cold dry Winter, missing Spring season (no flower blooms, no butterflies nor bees, no fruits, trees dropped leaves and branches, grasses turned brown, dams and the ground dried up to ‘sand’ ), … It has not been joyous time.

We just had 45 mm of rains in the last 2 days. Not a great amount to restore the land and the bush, but enough to give hopes for survival next Summer.

The two Niños (IOD and ENSO) conditions are still covering us. But hopes shine!

Future in Healthcare

As at 2566BE , we are looking at :
- Aging Population
longer life expectancy, lower birth rate, income support, and health conditions (see below)
- preventable diseases
Life Style diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and environmental conditions
- Diseases of the Aging Brain
Alzheimer’s disease, amyloid, DNA damage, memory, microarray, mitochondria, oxidative stress,…
advanced care and cure are still lacking, more research and new generation researchers

The future is as at 2570BE, we should plan, invest and start developing infrastructures now for our aging population and by adding languages [English, German, Japanese,..] and empathy (soft skill), we can have international markets (for skilled care workers) to build our economy too.

Food for Kids

A 4 year old told her mum ‘ I think this veggie doesn’t agree with me ‘.
‘ Oh! But you know that veggies are good for you’ said the mum.
The child paused a few seconds before telling her mum,
‘ I will eat veggies when I grow up ‘.

‘You are growing up, now . Why don’t you practice veggie eating? ‘
‘But I don’t like it.’ she said with conviction.
