Cicada-Geddon ! Cicada-Palooza

This phenomenon, which has been dubbed “cicada-geddon” or “cicada-palooza” happens in ‘Spring time’ (Northern Hemisphere: March-June; Southern Hemisphere: September-November).

The cicada life cycle has three stages: eggs, nymphs(quite long in years), and adults (very short in days). Female cicadas can lay up to 400 eggs divided among dozens of sites… periodical cicadas, synchronize their emergence every 13 or 17 years. This year’s event involves the 13-year Brood, currently emerging in the Carolinas, followed by the 17-year Brood in the Midwest. There could be a small area of overlap in central Illinois.

People that have sampled cicadas often say they taste similar to canned asparagus. (จั๊กจั่นทอด has been a Thai delicacy for a long time. Will we import cicadas from USA?)

In Australia. Green specimens are commonly known as green grocers and yellow ones as yellow mondays. The peak Cicada season is in November and December. Cicadas spend most of their life underground with many large Australian species living underground as nymphs for around 6-7 years.

Short Stick - Long Stick

After reading จาก ‘แบงก์ชาติ’ ถึง ‘รัฐบาล’ https://www.thaipost.net/columnist-people/575805/ , my curiosity took me over to look at ตราสัญลักษณ์ “ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย” เป็นรูป “พระสยามเทวาธิราช” พระหัตถ์ขวากำถุงเงิน ซ้ายพระแสงธารพระกร . from there I looked the word ธาร in the Royal Institute Thai-Thai Dictionary and found 2 meanings 1) การทรงไว้, การรับไว้, การหนุน, มักใช้เป็นบทหลังสมาส เช่น จุฑาธาร. ( ป., ส. ) and 2) น้ำ, ลำธาร, ห้วย, หยาดน้ำ, ท่อน้ำ. (ตัดมาจาก ธารา) - the common meaning. So, พระแสงธารพระกร means walking stick (ไม้เท้า or walking cane - it is usually made from cane or หวาย).

Then I looked up กกุธภัณฑ์ the word that describes a collection of the King’s personal utensils ( กกุธภัณฑ์ เครื่องใช้สำหรับพระมหากษัตริย์ เป็นเครื่องหมายแห่งความเป็นพระราชาธิบดี ประกอบด้วย ฉัตร มงกุฎ พระแสงขรรค์ ธารพระกร วาลวีชนี และฉลองพระบาท) and one webpage says ธารพระกร เป็นไม้ชัยพฤกษ์ หุ้มทองคำตลอด ปลายสุดเป็นซ่อมสามง่าม ยาว 64.5 ซม. (the one in ธปท. looks much longer).

A walking stick is usually made for comfort and safety of individual users. The correct length of a Walking Stick is from the ground to the user’s wrist joint when the arm is held by the side, plus some 5-8 cm for grip and comfort handle. The length is sometimes estimated by full height / 2 + 2?3cm . If this formula is used backwards to estimate the height of the person. Well, we can learn something by being curious!

NB. The picture for ฉลองพระบาท , as open-heel sandals with upturn-pointed toe cover, reminds me of the french ‘poulaine’ shoe style - quite popular in the medieval times (1340-1430 CE), and the same style as seen worn on the King Narai the Great (1656 to 1688 CE - 200 years later) statue. Perhaps, some curious minds may like to learn more. ;-)

The news headlines are worrying. They tell of impending danger with a measure that is more subjective.
Heat Index : temperature we feel; it is estimated from thermometer temperature and relative humidity with a NOAA heat index chart (https://www.noaa.gov/sites/default/files/2022-05/heatindex_chart_rh.pdf or https://www.weather.gov/ffc/hichart ) .

Why do we sweat when it is hot? It is not only the high temperature but also the humidity. It is really about the dew point when we sweat. So, we sweat because of temperature + high humidity. Why we have high humidity? … We have a convoluting system (when when interacting ‘parts’ have interacting effects or feedbacks on each other; high T –> high humid –> more dew/sweat –> high heat index –> high use of energy to coll down –> high ambient T –> high humid –>… )

Yesterday I had a feast of soft-boiled rice and several side dishes (accompaniments). One Item caught may interest and later concern. I learned from the label on the package that the fried dry fish were Roundbelly Sardine (Hurulla in Sinhalese) Amblygaster clupeoides a reef sardinella max size 27cm .

Later, I looked up how to estimate the Weight of a Fish. One imperial [British] system says:
- Weight of a fat-bodied fish. (bass, salmon) (length x girth x girth)/800.
- Weight of a slender fish. (trout, northern pike) (length x girth x girth)/900.
Example: If a fish is 20 inches long and has a 12–inch girth, its estimated weight is. (20 x 12 x 12)/900. 2,880/900=3.2 pounds.

I made a rough calculation (using the slender fish formula). The served fish were about 6-7 cm long, possibly weighed less than 10 g fresh. Had they been allowed to grow to full size (27 cm), each would weigh 165 g. In the market term, the fish were caught when they were 100 [fish] for 1 kilo[gram], instead of the bigger 6 to a kilo. Economically, we squander our marine resources by 94 fish/15 times.

What’s more? This Roundbelly Sardine is a reef fish. How much damage to the reef when trawling this small fish?

The great Solar Eclipse USA

April 8, 2024 USA time, millions of people watched a stellar event that the Moon came into the direct line between the Earth and the Sun. Perhaps we should call this event ‘when the Moon blocks out the Sun from a viewing zone on the Earth’. What did they really see? The dark side the Moon in the day time.

And when the Earth comes in a direct line between the Sun and the Moon. We call this Lunar Eclipse. And we marvel this event. What do we really see? A shadow of the Earth on the Moon. A shadow puppet show?

Questions: Can we see solar eclipses at night or lunar eclipses at day? Why?

We would wonder if this is a way to pump up the price of [one the most popular among foreign tourists] ‘weeds’. Statistically, Thailand’s Ministry of Health would have been spending a lot more health resources on ‘meth’ related incidents than ‘weed’ related incidents. Laws fit crimes?

Machine Intelligible (MI)

Currently new knowledge is developed and described in text and graphic narratives that require conversion and annotation to make the (new) knowledge machine intelligible (that is learn-able by digital devices). This delays inclusion of knowledge in AI framework and system. There are potential advantages for AI systems to be able to include new knowledge quickly and perhaps extend the knowledge or applications of the knowiedge by (machine) networking with other knowledge already learned (by machine).

Works in semantic nets and semantic languages and representations (eg. XML/RDF) for Web/Internet applications are showing potential for “webs of AI systems” (which may out-perform each individual AI systems).

Works to be done are a challenge for a few years ahead, but the sooner we start, the earlier we can benefit from the [super]-AI-[web] systems. To answer: How do make knowledge ‘machine intelligible’? How do we make AI system connectable or networkable? Can we verify and ‘blockchain’ knowledge topics/subjects so that the knowledge is ‘reliable’? …

Can Thailand get on this new ‘road to frontier’? Of course, we can and it may lead us to new economy and new knowledge society.

A mixed sight : protein and plastic lenses

Yesterday I had one protein lens destroyed and replaced by a plastic lens. In normal talks, I had an eye surgery to remove cataract and to implant an intraocular lens (IOL). The operation went well as planned (according to the record logged by the surgeon and his team) but I missed all the actions by unaesthetic. When I woke up half an hour later, it was time to go home with both eyes seeing.

I realized then that I now have a mixed sight through natural protein and plastic lenses.

For one more week, if I do all the right things like putting drops in my eyes, avoiding bending, heavy work and anything that may put pressure on my blood circulation and burst the incision in the eye. I should see the world twice better that before (with cataract in one eye). So touch wood ;-)

Where I live, this cataract treatment is fully covered by ‘Medicare’ (costing some $2-3,00 in manhours of specialists and support teams, operating theater procedures, and medical supplies, but free to me).

I am wishing myself well and hoping to master my better sight soon.

Weaning at Preschool

My grand daughter age 5 started schooling 6 weeks ago. She settled well in school activities (dancing, drawing, listening, playing games by the rules, taking turns, telling others children about activities outside school,… and yes weaning - learning to become independent or doing things for herself).

Parents et al are also being weaned from their children during school hours. Parental visits to class are discouraged, too!

Do we wean our children at 5 years old in Thai society?

The spotlight for Thailand political stage is switching between the ‘twin peaks’ (?) of power at the moment. Everyone (inside and outside) is confused and not knowing the truthful facts, so imagining on possibilities, thus adding on to the confusion.

Deeper still is the loss of trust or ศรัทธา . People have now lost trust on the social systems that are supposedly developed to uphold a society as a unified country. The whole chain of Justice procedures (rituals) has lost their meaning and become jokes rather than solemn rites to observe. The laws have lost their respectful trust – what parliaments have been legislating for many decades become just episodes of (political) another soap opera (on the media).

Do we miss what ‘trust’ we have had? Is that trust merely an illusion ( maya )? We never really…

– Thailand’s VAT 7% (legislated at 10%, but collected at 7%, this means government can increase VAT up to 10% anytime); 8% VAT is now the norm for SE Asian countries; there is a high probability that Thailand will go that way.

– This will increase prices on most consumer goods. The price increase will be offset by the ‘Give Away’ (to help ‘vulnerable people’ adjust to higher cost of living). The give-away money will be spent in a few months, but the VAT will stay on for years. There is no win for the people.

– Give Away by loan and under a system that no ordinary people can understand is a huge opportunity for frauds that would take years to uncover and very little chance to recover the money. Again there is no win for the people.

[Note. We can expect ‘fees’ [for government services] and ‘fines’ [for minor offences like traffic infringements] and ‘stamp duties’ [for transfer (of ownership) of properties and certain assets] to increase, too.]
