คำ article แบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 ชนิด คือ
A. Indefinite Article ได้แก่ a, an
B. Definite Article ได้แก่ the
A. Indefinite Article ได้แก่ a, an
หลักการใช้ a, an
1. ใช้ an นำหน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ a, e, i, o,u หรือออกเสียงสระไม่ว่าจะเขียนขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะก็ตามเช่น an elephant, an hour, an umbrella, an apple
2. ใช้ a, an นำหน้าคำนามเอกพจน์ที่นับได้เสมอที่มีความหมายเป็น"หนึ่ง"
She has a dog.
Give me an apple.
3. ใช้ a,an นำหน้าคำที่บอกอาชีพ
Junior's father is a doctor.
I want to be a teacher.
4. ใช้ a, an นำหน้านามเอกพน์ที่แปลเป็นต่อ...(หน่วย)
Oranges cost 50 baht a kilogram.
5. ใช้ a กับการเจ็บไข้ได้ป่วยเช่น
a stomachache, a headache, a fever
I ate somtam at lunch and now I have a stomachache.
6. ใช้ a,an ในประโยคอุทานตามหลัง what เช่น
What a nice dress!
What an old man!
เราจะไม่ใช้ a,an กับสิ่งต่อไปนี้
1.กับคำนามที่นับไมได้ (uncountable nouns)
2.ไม่ใช้นำหน้าชื่อวิชา ชื่อกีฬา ชื่อประเทศ ชื่อเมือง ชื่อมหาวิทยาลัย
3.ไม่ใช้หน้าคำที่เป็นมื้ออาหาร breakfast, lunch, dinner
B. Definite Article ได้แก่ the
หลักการใช้ the
1. ใช้กับคำนามนับได้เอกพจน์และพหูพจน์ที่เป็นการชี้เฉพาะเจาะจงลงไปว่าคนไหน อันไหน สิ่งไหน
2. ใช้ the นำหน้าคำนามที่มีสิ่งเดียว
the sun, the moon, the sky
3. ใช้ the นำหน้าชื่อครอบครัวเช่น
The Browns, The Lees
4. ตามปกติเราใช้ the นำหน้าชื่อหนังสือพิมพ์เช่น
The Nation, The Times, The Sun
5. ใช้ the กับชื่อสถนาที่
ทะเล the Pacific
เทือกเขา the Himalayas
แม่นํ้า the Mississippi
ทะเลทราย the Sahara
โรงแรม the Plaza
โรงหนังโรงละคร the Playhouse
พิภิธภัณฑ์ the National Museum
ชื่อประเทศที่มีคำว่า Republic, Kingdom, State
6. ใช้ the เมื่อเราพูดโดยทั่วไปในเรื่องเครื่องดนตรี

8. ใช้ the + คำคุณศัพท์เมื่อกล่าวถึงกลุ่มบุคคลเป็นพิเศษ

9. ใช้ the กับคำนามที่เราได้กล่าวมาแล้วทั้งผู้พูดและผู้ฟังรู้ว่ากำลังพูดถึงสิ่งใด
เราจะไม่ใช้ the กับสิ่งต่อไปนี้
1.ไม่ใช้ the นำหน้านาม+จำนวนเช่น room 255
2.ไม่ใช้ the เมื่อเราพูดถึงสิ่งของหรือบุคคลโดยทั่วไป
