The effect of group activity participation in self care behavior, Fasting blood sugar and Hemoglobin A1c in diabetes patient, DM clinic,Lampang Hospital.
Abstract
A Quasi experiment, one group pre and post test design was conducted to evaluate the effect of group activity participation in self care behavior, Fasting blood sugar (FBS) and Hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) in diabetes patient, at DM Clinic Lampang Hospital since April to October 2007. This study compared knowledge of disease, self care, FBS and HbA1c before and after two times participating in the group activities which were sharing knowledge regarding DM disease and its complication, self caring in diet control, medicine, exercise, foot care and general hygiene care. The measurement using in this study consisted of three parts including the personal data recording form, the self care behavior pre-posttest questionnaire which was developed from the Yauvaras Prapasanon self care DM evaluation, and laboratory data form. The personal data was analyzed using descriptive statistic. The self care behavior data was analyzed using Mean ,Standard Deviation, comparative pre-post test self care data, FBS and HbA1c data analyzed using t-test.
There were 201 patients participating in this study and the result of the study revealed that self care behavior of diabetes patients after group activity participation was better than before. The average score of knowledge and self care behavior of sample group were higher significantly (p= 0.001). The average of FBS and HbA1c level were decrease significantly (p =0.038) p =0.001), respectively. This study was concluded that group activity participation in diabetes patients had provided better behavior that could delay and decrease DM complication. Thus group activity participation should be considered to other chronic disease such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
