Wednesday, July 23, 2008;Entry level isn't as low as it used to be.
The average starting salary offer to college graduates this year was 7.1 percent higher than what last year's class received, according to a report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers. For liberal arts majors, starting pay gained a stunning 12.6 percent since 2007, the association found. In recent years, the gain has typically been zero to 4 percent.
Liberal arts majors, who study subjects such as Russian history and English literature, earn less than business school and engineering students, but their average salary has been bumped up $4,000 in one year, to $36,419.
"Demand for college graduates is still high," said Andrea Koncz, the association's employment information manager.
The association's annual survey was based on 15,239 job offers made at 123 member schools.
A handful of other majors also had robust gains from a year ago. Computer science graduates experienced a 13.1 percent rise, to $60,416, while those studying chemical and civil engineering each gained 6.4 percent.
