Abstract
The Health Promoting Rural Hospital: A Case Study of Approach to success at Bantak Hospital, Thailand.

Almost hospitals in Thailand have responsibility to become health promoting organizations for the their district populations. This includes hospital based secondary care, primary care and preventative services. The new conceptsare required to achieve these diverse aims. This paper evaluates the success factors that make Bantak Hospital to be accredited Health Promoting Hospital Standard (HPH) from The Institute of Quality Improvement and Hospital Accreditation, Thailand.Qualitative research study in Bantak hospital was studied by using observation and interview with documentary analysis during 1997-2005.
Bantak hospital has the concepts to developing HPH. The activities that doing shown about holistic care, focus on comprehensive with health promotion, disease control and prevention, curation and rehabilitation both western and alternative medicine. The most of activities must relative with hospital direction and strategies focus on community health problems solving. They managed by result focus with empowerment and participation. The activities didn’t limit only in area of hospital responsibility but covered all of area in Bantak district, working with district health office, health centers and community participation especially joining to school, temple and villagers. There are a lot of innovations came from their staff for quality and safety caring population all together normal group, risk group and patient group. The manager and staff build the long term direction and result together for 3 equilibrium ultimate outcomes: healthy population, healthy staff and healthy hospital.
These activities in HPH come from the 9th concepts: Focus on health, strategic driven, empowerment, customer & population focus, process management, Innovation & creativity, teamwork with commitment, participation, sustainability. These called Total Healthy Management or The 9th disciplines for HPH. This has significantly improved health outcomes. The model has many of the feature promoted by the World Health Organisation for improving health services in rural areas and has utility in other rural areas.
