It is one insightful sutta. It begins with a king overfilling himself with cooked rice (from 1 ทะนาน of uncooked rice), and after days of experimentation, ending with the king eating only 1 ทะนาน of cooked rice). According to the Royal Institute Thai dictionary, 1 ทะนาน is volume measure (made from กะโหลกมะพร้าว) equivalent of 8 ฟายมือ (เต็มอุ้งมือ, เรียกของที่เต็มฝ่ามือที่ห่อเข้าว่า ฟายมือหนึ่ง; open palm with fingers squeezed tight to hold water; 1 กำมือ or 1 fistful is less than 1 palmful - in modern measure 1 ทัพพี [ladle]? ). Many people would feel overwhelmed by 1 ทะนาน (8 ladles) of cooked rice. Perhaps, people should experiment and find the right amount of food by themselves, not from a book or advice.

Isn’t that what Buddhism is about? Discovering limits for oneself by oneself.
