In Queensland Australia, there is a long running program for high school students to gain work experience from local businesses for some 2 weeks before graduation. The program is well received by parents, students and businesses. Many students continue with the local businesses and further their higher education part-time.

I understand that during the work experience period, students are not paid but covered by work insurances and work safety and enjoy many employment benefits of the particular businesses.
