I feel however the use of the Thai title ‘อะไรคือลำดับขั้นของการเรียนรู้ที่มีความสำคัญ’ for Terry Helick’s article title ‘What is the taxonomy of significant learning?’ is somewhat misleading. ‘Taxonomy’ is simply a classification into groups based on similarities or certain criteria. The Thai-English Lexitron 2.0 dictionary gives meaning of ‘taxonomy’ as ‘วิทยาศาสตร์หรือเทคนิคเกี่ยวกับการแบ่งประเภท’ (การจัดแบ่งสิ่งมีชีวิตออกเป็นกลุ่มต่างๆ). When applied to ‘learning’, we can say ‘การจัดแบ่ง การเรียนรู้ ออกเป็นกลุ่มต่างๆ’.

The difference between การแบ่งประเภท/การจัดแบ่ง…เป็นกลุ่มต่างๆ and (การ)ลำดับขั้น is clear. การลำดับขั้น involves rating/ranking/staging - assigning order to groups. But taxonomy limits to grouping - assigning group membership without ranking.

Readers should perceive that learning has many ‘significant’ (noted) types and combinations of these types can serve very well. There is no ‘rating’ or ranking of any (of the noted) learning types that readers should choose (in order) for their values to their learning.
