“คำพ้อง” is a vague notion. There are 3 major types ‘homonym’ (คำพ้องรูป); ‘homophone’(คำพ้องเสียง); and ‘synonym’(คำพ้องความหมาย) [which is discussed above - in the thesaurus (similar meaning) context].

You are absolutely right to warn that ‘like words’ are just ‘like’ not ‘the same’. Thesaurus gives a list of ‘similar’ (in meaning) words that we can choose to use for specific context but not to interchange words without considering local audience and/or context.
