The Buddha taught that "we should learn NOT to consume alcohols and other addictive drugs" because doing so can impair our thinking and ability to conduct ourselves in accordant to the other siilas (:learn NOT to kill, NOT to steal, NOT to destroy family relations, NOT to lie,...)

Modern reasons for drinking can be summed up as 'to be AS BAD AS the next guy'.
