I was guessing 'ants nest' but there was no ant to be seen (they would have come out to defend the nest and tell us straight away). My next guess was a kind of 'leaf roller' caterpillar (of a moth or a butterfly) in its coccoon stage -- we have to open the nest to see -- despite a (natural) 'do not disturb' sign. Or perhaps a kind of spiders.
