Yes "The evening was nice albeit cold." is shorter than "The evening was nice though/but it was cold" but It could have been written with "implied subject" as "The evening was nice but cold." or "The evening was nice though cold." (where "the evening was" is implied for both "adverbs").
PSE says we should:
- use simple/more common words or phrases
- use simple sentences (ones with "[subject] [verb] [adverb] [preprosition] [object]")
- try to spell out everything in full (no implicit subject or implicit object) unless...
What important is that listeners or readers can understand clearly what we mean to say or write.
I have no objection to any use of "abeit" if target audience can understand the message.
