You remind me of the Very Venerable Aananda who was said to possess photographic memory (he remembered more than 84,000 verses that are now recorded in the Tipitaka), but he was not an arahant (learned/knowing) until the night before the Sanghaayanaa commenced.
Perhaps, that night the VV Aananda came to realize all that he had in memory are just record not inderstanding, and from what he remembered he reflected and then understood, and he became an arahant for what he could understand (not for what he could remember).
