Reading the title and seeing the word ธรรมบัญญัติ -- for a moment I had a thought that you had turned to Christian because ธรรมบัญญัติ is used quite often to mean "the 10 Commandments".
Thank you for your advice and some "new vocabulary" for learning Buddhism.
And yes most people think of ทำบุญ as making instalments or paying a bit for (an admission ticket to) heavens. Many people also think that giving to monks (more than they need -- by the Vinaya) will better-ensure that they gain บุญ. (So we have big decorated buildings in wats surrounded by rundown buildings belonging to people who are ready to depart the world and go into heavens.
Sorry! You are talking about learning dhamma by oneself. But I am talking anout learning dhamma "at large" (as in school or in environment). A day will come (or have gone?) when people honestly practice the 5 siila then ทำบุญ -- rather than ทำบุญ so that they can wipe clean any break of the siila.
But what is more important? If ทำบุญ makes us happy ;-)
