 อ้าว...ถ้าจริงดังว่าทำไมไม่อ่านออกเสียงว่า สะบุรี  ล่ะ  ทำไมออกเสียงว่า สะหระบุรี 

I look up the Digital Pali Reader dictionary (some results below) and I think it is very probable that Thais messed this up by reading สระ as สะ instead of สะรา or สะระ as in Sankskrit or Paali (บาลี for ปาลิ).

After considering "mahaa-sara" (7 มหาสมุทร์), I think naming a town after a (dreat) source od water is quite defensible. So, "...ทรงประทานชื่อเมืองเสียใหม่ ว่า สระบุรี  (จากเดิมอาจเป็นเมือง “สระหนองโง้ง”  ก็เป็นได้)..." sounds right, too.

And it is interesting to see that we have a sound not properly represented in Thai writing system. We see that สระ in สระบุรี is read สะหระ but the sound for สะ is slightly shorter than the sound for หระ. ;'-]
