I have observed:

Thais bank their old age care on their daughters; along the old Indian culture (families with only daughters still pay big dowry to gain a son --in-law and worker/protector/breeder/...)

Chinese bank their old age care on their first born son (with the 1-child policy, now many Chinese men are looking after a) their own family, b) their old parents, c) their wife's parents; so income for 1 man must provide for 6 people; this is becoming impossible for many; old Chinese are being left uncared).

Someone told me, having daughters are like having toilets in the front yard because "flies" come around; although, daughters are more like flowers (in the front garden), flowers have unfortunately a nasty connotation that no girls want to be (except by one 'คำ ผกา' -- ดอก ทอง?).

In Australia, children of either gender are strongly encouraged to have a go --to build their own life and family when they finish high school (17-18 years old), Old parents are left to care for themselves or put in nursing homes so the assets can be used by the children.
