I think public servants (including police, defence personnel, medical providers and teachers and so on) must be on the people side. Political appointment (elected) must also acts in the interests of the people -- whatever their political views are.
Political views should and must be confined to the philosophy and the methods in arriving at solutions that solve people's problems. People delegate their power to politicians to solve problems for them. Use of the people in any other ways is "corruption of power and trust".
