It was last September that I was at Wat Pa Ban Tad. About 10 people spent the night. Most were people who stayed nights to do a meditation (m-days) course. We were by best description 'backpackers' and freebees ;-)
There was a lady upasika who received us and provided mats and suggested a good pole with electric fans to settle down. Two dogs came to investigate. One stayed on as my companion for half a night. I felt welcome and safe but not comfortable or in private (I did not expect any anyway). I had concerns over contacting flu and fleas and soil worms... But I shook them off from my mind and slept (for 5 hours). Then the monks in the enclosed and separate area some 30 meters away from the pavilion, were up and did their things (I could not see). So, I decided that it was time to go too. It took 5 minutes to clear out (no check-out ;-).
I had some thought about providing accommodation for strictly Thai backpackers so kids can travel and see the country. But, I could not see that happened without freeing up many old "traditions" and "rivalry". Maybe, we can if we try --and work hings out as we go--.
