UK economy still lagging with GDP growth of 0.5pc

The UK economy grew only marginally in the first three months of 2011, with the Office for National Statistics confirming GDP growth of just 0.5pc.
According to the ONS, the economy remains below the level of output recorded before the start of the recession in 2008.
GDP has recovered about a third of the output lost during the recession. In the past two recessions it took just over three years for output to reach pre-recession level.
Comparing past downturns, GDP fell 4.6pc in the 1980s recession, by 2.5pc in the 1990s and by a much greater 6.4pc in the most recent recession.
The GDP growth of 0.5pc in the first quarter compares to a 0.5pc contraction in the last three months of 2010. However, the fall in GDP in the last quarter of 2010 could be attributed to the bad weather conditions.
The ONS said, “The effect of the abnormal weather conditions in December 2010 is estimated to have subtracted 0.5pc from growth in the fourth quarter.”
GDP is estimated now to have returned to the level in the third quarter of 2010.
In Q1, there was an upward revision to first-quarter construction output, but this was cancelled out by a downward revision to manufacturing.
In even more bad news on the economic data front, household consumption fell by 0.6pc, its biggest fall since 2009, when the country was in the tight grips of the recession.
Data on first-quarter current account data was also released, showing that Britain's deficit with the rest of the world narrowed to £9.35bn.
