The Spirit in Education Movement
Our PhilosophyEngaged Spirituality “Wisdom & Virtue” As chairperson of a private school in Thailand, I believe that the transformation of society must go hand in hand with the transformation of the self. We must nurture and cultivate generosity, compassion, and wisdom in our hearts while we work for educational development and reform. By improving ourselves, we become role models for future generations so that they may carry on our work with high ethical standards. By practicing mindfulness, we awaken ourselves to the present moment and become aware of the suffering that surrounds us. The reconstruction of a spiritual, green, and just society begins with this clarity in the individual mind and leads to deeper understanding of social structures.
Our Mission to Strengthen International Solidarity
1. Meeting basic learning needs constitutes a common and universal human responsibility. It requires international solidarity, equitability and fair economic relations so that we may redress existing economic disparities. All nations have valuable knowledge and experience to share in designing effective educational policies and programs. 2. Substantial and long-term increases in resources for basic education are a necessity. The world community, including intergovernmental agencies and institutions, has an urgent responsibility to alleviate the constraints that prevent some countries from achieving the goal of education for all. It will mean the adoption of measures that augment the national budgets of poorer countries or serve to relieve heavy debt burdens. Creditors and debtors must seek innovative and equitable formulae to resolve these burdens, since the capacity of many developing countries to respond effectively to education and other basic needs will be greatly helped by finding solutions to the debt problem. 3. Basic learning needs of adults and children must be addressed wherever they exist. Less developed and low-income countries have special needs which require priority in international support for basic education in today’s world. 4. All nations must also work together to resolve conflicts and strife, to end military occupations, and to settle displaced populations or facilitate their return to their countries of origin and ensure that their basic learning needs are met. Only a stable and peaceful environment can create the conditions in which every human being, child and adult alike, may benefit from the goals of this Declaration.
Returning Learning to Society
When schools came into existence, the learning that once occurred in daily life was segregated. It is now the task of educators to teach our children to realize their potential. Our aim, therefore, is to ensure that the quality of education meets the goals set by the education standard. Our goal is to work for educational reform at all levels of private schooling. For this reason, we work with the private school and society, listening to and learning from the people themselves. We seek alternatives to the destructive patterns so prevalent in the world today. At the same time, we look for ways to eradicate or transform the patterns of life that are at the root of such violence.
Our Principles (Private School Section: PSS)
PSS aspires to create an environment to awaken natural wisdom and cultivate compassion as well as intellect.PSS aspires to benefit educational development.PSS will involve students and teachers with current projects concerning environmental issues and social justice.PSS links together action, sufficiency economy, and intellectual learningPSS uses a wide variety of mediums, both physical and mental, e.g. art, books, videos, performance, meditation, seeing, feeling, and understanding with the heart.
