Thank you for the link to the book. I read a few chapters so far.
Chapter 1 introduces บางกะเจ้า ปอดของกรุงเทพ, and chapter 2 tells ที่มา ชื่อบางกะเจ้า …แต่สันนิษฐานว่ํา คำว่ํา ‘กะเจ้า’ ม่าจากคำว่ํา ‘นกกระยาง’ ในภาษาเขมร… This struck me as odd, so I looked up the Royal Society Thai Dictionary (2542 and 2554 editions) and did not find ‘กะเจ้า’ nor ‘กะเจ่า’ in the dictionaries. But
From Royal Institute Dictionary (2542 Th-Th)กระเจ้า ๑ (ถิ่น) น. นกยาง เช่น กระจาบกระเจ้าจับ ซ้องศัพทอึงอล. ๒ (ถิ่น-พายัพ, ปักษ์ใต้) น. ต้นกระเชา. ( ดู กระเชา)กระเจ่า (ถิ่น) น. นกยาง เช่น กระจาบกระเจ้าจับ ซ้องศัพทอึงอล.
Google’s Translate (Thai -> Khmer) says:กระยาง = សត្វក្រៀល สัต-กึ-เรียล / สัต เกรฺียล in Khmer (សត្វ = สัตว์) กระเจ้า = ព្រះ เพรีย (= พระเจ้า in Thai)
So there is a (trivial) inconsistency possibly in the dictionary as it does not include this official locality (‘place name’). The example ‘กระจาบกระเจ้าจับ ซ้องศัพทอึงอล’ is given without reference to its origin. This example is propagated to many Thai dictionary websites. Perhaps the Royal Society should update the Thai dictionary and provide references so we have a more comprehensive dictionary.
