Dictionary of Problem Words and Expressions:

flotsam & jetsam

These terms usually appear together to that part of

the wreckage of a ship and its cargo

found floating on the water or washed ashore.

The phrase “flotsam and jetsam“ now has an extended

meaning of “useless trifles,” “odds and ends”:

“The attic was filled with the flotsam and jetsam for many years.”

Although the words are now inseparable

in law they have distinct meaning.

Flotsam (from an Old English word meaning “to float”)

is that part of a wreck that is floating on the surface

jetsam (from a Latin term meaning “to throw”)

refers to cargo tossed overboard to lighten a ship

          or improve its seaworthiness.

Centuries ago

theflotsam of a wreckage belonged to the king,

jetsam to the lord of the manor off whose property the wreck occurred.

Flotsam and Jetsam Aren't Just Ursula's Eels

English speakers started using flotsamjetsamand lagan

as legal terms in the 16th and 17th centuries

(the earliest evidence of flotsam dates from around the early 1600s).

The three words were used to establish claims of ownership

to the three types of seaborne, vessel-originated goods they named.

Flotsam was anything from a shipwreck

(the word comes from Old French floter, meaning "to float").

Jetsam and lagan were items thrown overboard to lighten a ship.

Lagan wasdistinguished from jetsam by having a buoy attached

so the goods could be found if they sank

In the 19th century, when flotsam and jetsam took on extended meanings

              they became synonyms,

but they are still very often paired.

Flotsam

As the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 continues ...

When:

Lookups spiked on March 26, 2014.

Why:

Investigators have said many times that

flotsam in the Indian Ocean is responsible for false leads

in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

Recent photos taken by satellite and aircraft show some debris

that may be from the missing plane

However, as Wired reported on Friday:

None of the aircraft or ships in the region have found anything of note

and officials said the photos may reveal nothing more than whitecaps

or the flotsam so often found at sea.

Flotsam means "floating wreckage from a ship or its cargo

                      or "floating debris."

It comes from the French verb meaning "to float."

Flotsam is often contrasted with jetsam,

a word derived from jettison that means

"floating objects that are thrown into the water from a ship."
