I do scanning news headlines near every morning to see ‘very roughly’ what happened recently and what are likely to happen. Today (3 March 2565BE), I got stuck on 'trend' headlines about ‘แตงโม’ and after recalling that the head of police (ผบตร.) had stated ‘strong interest in solving case’ a day or two earlier.

Now these 2 headlines make me wonder about police investigations and processes.

There are a lot of questions on this lack of interest to recover a piece of ‘evidence’ (that possibly links to the wound on the victim's thigh leading to her inability to save herself - having been known as a good swimmer- ). When the investigating police show no interest in recovering evidence (an alloy of considerable size and weight) but instead continue on the investigation with a ceremony that appeals to a supernatural help, we should ask if we have evidence-based justice systems in Thailand. Or we are back in the ‘good old days’ when supernatural justice ruled. Is it possible for anyone to prove innocence by swearing to a deity? Why do we need a lot of high ranking (high salary and peripheral benefits) police in the justice processes when deities (generally) cost nothing?

On another hand, we could ask which is more ‘just’ (and ‘fair’), deva or police?

 

A misty web of justice amid the common leaves of life.

 

There are many more examples of this cultural practice in Thailand's society and communities. We need to see them and learn them before we can change them for the better.

[On 26/4/2565 police issued a statement declaring ‘end of investigation’ on this case and summed it up as ‘accidental death’. There are many ‘loose ends’ that many people are still not satisfied. Justice remains cloudy in both ‘spirit’ and in the ‘process’. Below is a follow-up on 3/5/2565:
