วลี ASIDE FROM เป็นคำฟุ่มเฟือย ควรแทนด้วย BESIDE หรือ ‘Aside from’ เช่น
“Besides (หรือ aside from) his cruelty, he was also arrogant.”
วลี AS IF ใช้มากกว่า AS THOUGH (ที่ผู้พิถีพิถัน ชอบใช้) และ LIKE
ทั้ง พูดและเขียน ส่วนใหญ่ไม่เป็นทางการ
ใช้ทั้งสองวลี นําหน้า กริยา ใน ‘subjunctive mood’ เช่น
‘He left the room as though (as if) he was angry.’
เมื่อใช้ ‘ไม่เป็นทางการ’ บางครั้งแทนด้วย LIKEถือว่า”ตํากว่ามาตรฐาน”
และไม่เคยให้ตามด้วย กริยาใน ‘subjunctive mood.’

การใช้ “as if” และ “as though”
สามารถ เริ่มต้น ข้อความด้วย AS IF หรือ AS THOUGH
เมื่อ บรรยาย “HOW something/body LOOKS/BEHAVE เช่น
‘It’s a wonderful item and in such good condition that it looks as though it was bought yesterday.’
‘He lunged towards me as if he expected me to aim a gun at him.’
คนจํานวนมาก คิดว่า ไม่ถูกต้อง ที่จะใช้ WAS ในข้อความ แบบนี้
ว่า ควรแทนด้วย WERE เช่น
‘He looked at me as if I were mad.’
‘She remembered it all as if it were yesterday.’
อย่างไรก็ตาม ในการสนทนา ปกติ ผู้คน เลือกใช้ WAS เช่น
‘The secretary spoke as though it wassome kind of password.’
‘He gave his order as if this was only another training exercise.’
ในการสนทนา สามารถใช้ “was” หรือ “were” ก็ได้
หากแต่ ในการเขียน เป็นทางการ ควรใช้ “were”
บางคน ใช้ LIKE แทนที่ “as if” หรือ “as though” เช่น
‘He looked like he felt sorry for me.’
‘Sheer! put up balloons all over the house like it was a six-year-old’s party.’
หากแต่ การใช้ ลักษณะนี้โดยทัวไป ถือว่า “ไม่ถูกต้อง”
