การศึกษาแนวใหม่กับอนาคตของมนุษย์

New Education and the Future of Man

In a rapidly changing world, we need new education. Learning process in most schools and universities today is incompatible with developing present day citizen. We know much more of the mechanisms of learning, but we apply less of those knowledge.

Today’s education is producing followers of the 20th century. What we need is an education which produces leaders of the 21st century.

New education is not new in term of theory, but very new in term of application. Our education system has resistance to change and in doing so is damaging our society by producing low quality or not-up-to full potential citizen.

21st century learning aims at helping learners achieving 21st century skills --- a very complex set of skills for good life now and in the future. The learning process requires learners practicing the application of knowledge in real-life or near real-life settings by working in teams. Reflection after the action facilitated by skilled teacher will enable a mastery learning.

Content learning is not an end, it is only a means of learning new content. Nowadays content can be acquired from the internet. What is essential is the skills of selecting the right content for use in a specific context.

Learning knowledge and skills is important, but more important is the development of good characters. New education or integrated learning process help developing all targets.

To achieve the goals new teaching skills and new teachers are required. New teachers do not teach but design, develop the right learning environment, facilitate and coach. Students learn by doing or working in team followed by critical reflection.

Students learn targeted content via ICT at home and practice applying the knowledge at school facilitated by teachers … flipped classroom. In that manner teachers’ time is more valuable to the students’ learning.

New teachers do the embedded formative assessment followed by constructive feedback to the students during student action and in the reflection process.

New Teachers also learn in team from the actions above. Forming professional learning community (PLC).

Since human brain has more plasticity during early childhood and adolescence, more emphasis should be put to learning for brain stimulation during the time. But human brain has lifelong plasticity, lifelong learning by doing followed by reflecting should be facilitated to the whole population.
