Khon Kaen : City of Sports

            You might have taken part in or known about the recent International Marathon in Khon Kaen City if you were interested in sports.  And if you are a native of Khon Kaen, you will be proud of your citizenship here.

            The following news can bring pride and joy to all Khon Kaen citizens when the National Games will be held in Khon Kaen City.  The National Games mean a great deal to the city because it will show to all Thai people that it can hold the biggest games in the nation.

            At the moment, the Khon Kaen Municipality is improving the Municipal Grand Stadium to look perfect and ready for the Games at the end of this year.  This Grand Stadium will be the main venue of sports competitions especially football matches as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

            For some sports events such as shooting, golfing, boat rowing and sailing, the Military Barracks in the municipal area, the golf course at Ubonrat Dam, Kaen Nakhon Lake and Nong Khot Lake, also in the municipal area, will be used respectively.  In addition, the Khon Kaen University Gymnasium will be inclouded as another venue of sports competitions.

           The different places mean competitors and those who want to watch the competitions must travel around the city and to a remote place in Nam Phong District for the golf tournaments.  In this case, the organizing committee can promote tourism at the beautiful Ubonrat Dam as well as Kaen Nakhon Lake and Nong Khot Lake, just close to the Grand Stadium.

           Another topic which brings pride and joy to Khon Kaen City is that Khon Kaen City becomes a football team in Thai Premier League, known as Khon Kaen Football Club (KKFC).  Recently, KKFC played against Bangkok Glass Football Club (BGFC) from Bangkok, which is a famous football team in Thai Premier League, at Khon Kaen University Soccer/Football Field.  A lot of Khon Kaen football fans gathered to cheer on their players.

           Impressively, Khon Kaen City produces such well-known sportsmen as Kiatisak Senamuang (Zico), a Thai soccer star, Somluck Khamsing, an Olympic Gold boxer and Paradon Srichapun (Ball), a world-class tennis player.  If you are a Khon Kaen native and seriously interested in playing sports, you can become as famous as those VIPs mentioned above.

           So, start practicing your favorite sport now so that you will be readily prepared for the coming National Games in Khon Kaen City.

คำอธิบายศัพท์และสำนวนที่ควรรู้ 

1. recent (อ่าน รี-ซึ้นทฺ) คำคุณศัพท์ เมื่อเติม –ly (recently) จะเป็นกริยาวิเศษณ์ มีความหมายว่า “เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ (only a short time ago) การแข่งมาราธอนนานาชาติที่ขอนแก่นจัดขั้นเมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ (23 ม.ค.2554)
2. native (อ่าน เน-ทีฝฺ) คำนาม หมายถึง “คนที่เกิด, คนพื้นเพ” เช่น a native of Khon Kaen (คนพื้นเพขอนแก่น) รากศัพท์ของคำนี้ คือ nation (ประเทศชาติ)
3. proud (อ่าน พราวดฺ) คำคุณศัพท์ หมายถึง “ภูมิใจ” นิยมใช้กับบุพบท of ในความหมายว่า “ภูมิใจใน” (proud of ) เช่น I am proud of Thai citizenship (ฉันภูมิใจในความเป็นคนไทย) บทนี้ไม่มีแนวโน้มไปทางด้านการเมืองนะครับ เพราะมีพรรคการเมืองชื่อ “ภูมิใจไทย” อยู่ด้วย คำนาม pride มีใช้อยู่แล้วในบท
4. National Games (อ่าน แนช-ชั่น-เนอล เกมสฺ) คือ กีฬาแห่งชาติ จัดขึ้นทุกปี วนเวียนไปตามจังหวัดต่างๆ ที่พร้อมจะเป็นเจ้าภาพ ปีนี้ขอนแก่นเป็นจังหวัดเจ้าภาพ (host province)
5. Municipality (อ่าน มิว-นิ-ซิ-แพล-ลิ-ที) คำนามแปลว่า “เทศบาล” เช่น Khon Kaen Municipality (เทศบาทนครขอนแก่น) คำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ในบทคือ Municipal เช่น Municipal Grand Stadium (สนามกีฬากลางเทศบาล)
6. venue (อ่าน เวน-ยู) รากศัพท์มาจากภาษาฝรั่งเศส venir แปลว่า “มา” (come) ภาษาอังกฤษขอยืมมาใช้ในความหมาย “สถานที่” (a place) สถานที่แข่งขันกีฬาแห่งชาติ คือ สนามกีฬากลางเทศบาลขอนแก่น อาคารพลศึกษาของ มข. ก็เป็นอีกสถานที่หนึ่งที่ใช้ในการแข่งขัน
7. respectively (อ่าน ริส-เปค-ทีฝ-ลี) กริยาวิเศษณ์ คำ respect ซึ่งเป็นที่มาของคำนี้ แปลว่า “เคารพนับถือ” เช่น I respect my senior English teacher. (อาจารย์สอนภาษาอังกฤษอาวุโส) แต่คำ respectively มีความหมายแตกต่างจากคำเดิมอย่างสิ้นเชิง ในความหมาย “ตามลำดับ” (ก่อน-หลัง)
8. remote (อ่าน ริ-โมท) ท่านต้องคุ้นเคยกับคำนี้เป็นอย่างดี เพราะอาจใช้ประจำในการเปิด-ปิดทีวี ถึงอยู่ไกลเครื่องรับก็เปิด-ปิดได้อย่างสะดวกสบาย ในบท อ.น้ำพอง อยู่ไกลจาก อ.เมือง 50 กม. จะใช้เป็นสถานที่แข่งขันกอล์ฟ
9. impressively (อ่าน อิม-เพรส-ซิฝ-ลี) กริยาวิเศษณ์ จากคุณศัพท์ impressive และกริยา impress แปลว่า “อย่างน่าประทับใจ” ขอนแก่นผลิตนักกีฬาที่โด่งดังทั้งภายในประเทศและนอกประเทศ เช่น เกียรติศักดิ์ เสนาเมือง, สมรักษ์ คำสิงห์ และภราดร ศรีชาพันธุ์ เป็นต้น
10.  VIPs (อ่าน วีไอพี) เป็นอักษรย่อของคำ Very Important Persons (บุคคลสำคัญมาก) หรือท่านคิดว่าบุคคลที่กล่าวนามในข้อ 9 จะไม่มีความสำคัญมากต่อประเทศชาติ สนามบินหลายแห่งจัดห้องหรูหราไว้รองรับผู้โดยสารบิ๊กๆ เรียกว่า VIP Lounge ท่านมีโอกาสได้เข้าไปใช้บริการแล้วหรือยัง
