คำบุพบท

เป็นคำ หรือกลุ่มคำที่วางหน้า noun หรือ pronoun เพื่อแสดงว่าคำนามหรือสรรพนามนั้นเกี่ยวข้องกับคำอื่นๆในประโยคอย่างไรเช่น on, at, in, from, within

คำบุพบท

            คือคำที่แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง คำนามหรือคำสรรพนาม กับคำอื่นในประโยค

            Sue and Sam are are in the room.             ซูและแซมอยู่ในห้อง

            Sue and Sam  – ซูและแซม  เป็นคำนาม     เป็นประธานของประโยค

            are – อยู่                     เป็นคำกริยา               เป็นกริยาของประโยค

            in – ใน                         เป็นคำบุพบท             แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง

“ซูและแซม” กับ “ห้อง”

            the room – ห้อง         เป็นคำนาม                 เป็นส่วนที่ทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์

            The cat is sleeping under the bed. แมวนอนหลับอยู่ใต้เตียง

            The cat – แมว            เป็นคำนาม                 เป็นประธานของประโยค

            is sleeping – หลับ      เป็นคำกริยา               เป็นกริยาของประโยค

            under – ใต้                  เป็นคำบุพบท             แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง

                                                                                    “แมว”  กับ “เตียง”

            the bed – เตียง           เป็นคำนาม                 เป็นส่วนที่ทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์

            คำบุพบท (preposition) แบ่งออกเป็นชนิดใหญ่ๆได้ ดังนี้

1. Prepositions of Places – คำบุพบทเกี่ยวกับสถานที่ หมายถึง คำบุพบทที่บอกตำแหน่งแหล่งที่ว่าสิ่งนั้นๆ
อยู่ที่ไหน  บ้างก็เรียกบุพบทเหล่านี้ว่า  preposition of positions เช่น

2. Prepositions of Time – คำบุพบทเกี่ยวกับเวลา หมายถึง คำบุพบทที่บอกกาลเวลา เช่น
