ISLAM AND HEALTH

Dear Friday Congregation,

Islam is the Ad-Din, meaning a way of life. This means that it is the religion which encompasses all facets of our life. Hence, all that is related to our lives as human beings must be based on Islamic principles.

Since health is also part of life, therefore health and all that is related to it would have been explained by Islam and must base itself on Islamic principles.

Islam regards both health and treatment as very important for the following reasons :

First, taking care of health is part of the objectives of the Syariah.

(Maqasid Syar’iah).

When Islam safeguards life, that would ultimately include safeguarding health as life is miserable without good health. What follows will elaborate on this point. What we would like to highlight here is that there is a direct link between health in Islam and the issue of principles and the objectives of the syariah.

Second, Islam allows treatment to safeguard good health.

Prophet Muhammad praises of Allah be upon Him encourages his ummah to seek treatment for illnesses. He says in a hadith “

Indeed Allah has brought to mankind illnesses and cure and for each illness there is a cure, so seek treatment but not with anything which is prohibited”(Narrated by Abu Daud)

Islam allows seeking treatment, and infact, Islam orders one to do so and it can become obligatory in certain circumstances as mentioned in the hadith. Allah Al-Mighty has guaranteed that each disease or illness has its own cure, and that suffices to encourage Muslims to search for the cure for various illnesses. Prophet Muhammad himself introduced a variety of treatment which was suitable in those days. This shows that Islam is serious in encouraging Muslims to seek treatment.

Third, Islam places the gift of goodhealth as the second most blessed and gracious after the gift of Iman (faith).

For this reason, Islam encourages Muslims to fully utilise the gift of good health in the best possible manner as our beloved Prophet Muhammad mentions in a hadith :

“Seize five opportunities before five difficulties befall you; your youthhood before old-age, your good health before you fall sick, your leisure time before you get busy, your life before death” (Narrated by Al-Hakim)

Fourth, Islam encourages us to pray for good health.

Prophet Muhammad praises of Allah be upon Him says :

“Nothing sought from Allah is more beloved to Him than seeking ‘afiah (good health)” (Narrated by At-Turmuzi)

Fifth, Islam encourages all activities that would ensure good health.

Among the activities are those that have been mentioned by Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h.

“If not for burdening my ummah, I would have asked them to use the siwak to cleanse their mouth every time they want to perform their prayers” (Riwayat Muslim)

Prophet has also encouraged us to safeguard the cleanliness of our environment in his saying :

“Fear two things which bring curse. The companions asked What are those two things O Prophet? Prophet replied : Those who urinate or excrete in public areas i.e. passageways and shelters” (Narrated by Imam Muslim)

Sixth, Islam accords a special status to those who take care of their health.

Generally ,that could be understood from the following hadith.

“A strong Mukmin is better and more beloved by Allah than one who is weak” (Narrated by An-Nasa’ii)

Those who are healthy are also preferred in matters of leadership as mentioned by Allah Al-Mighty

“Truly the best of men for thee to employ is the (man) who is strong and trusty" (Al-Qasas : 26)

Allah Al-Mighty mentions in the Quran :

“Their Prophet said to them: "Allah hath appointed Talut as king over you." They said: "How can he exercise authority over us when we are better fitted than he to exercise authority, and he is not even gifted, with wealth in abundance?" He said: "Allah hath Chosen him above you, and hath gifted him abundantly with knowledge and bodily prowess: Allah Granteth His authority to whom He pleaseth. Allah careth for all, and He knoweth all things." (Al-Baqarah : 246)

To summarise, Islam as a way of life cannot be practised fully and cannot be appreciated if good health is non-existent in a Muslim’s life. Sickness will undeniably affect a Muslim to fulfil his role and mission for being created, that is to worship Allah Al-Mighty and to be His vicegerent on the face of this earth and bring about its development.

From another perspective, the importance of health  can be seen at both the individual and social levels. A healthy person is able to develop himself and benefit others. He is also able to protect himself from endangering and bringing threat to others and to his own society. Likewise, a community may not succeed and develop without individuals who have good health. Islam as Ad-Din, the religion, emphasizes strongly the formation of a healthy community.
