โครงการเกี่ยวสัตว์ป่าที่สร้างสรรค์นี้ จะเริ่มในฤดูใบไม้ผลิเป็นเวลา 4 เดือน (เริ่มแล้วจนถึงสิ้นเดือนสิงหาคม) โครงการนี้เชิญชวนชาวอังกฤษทุกคนร่วม สำรวจ จ้องมอง ชื่นชมกับผีเสื้อ 58 สปีชีส์ (ในทั้งหมดนี้ 2 ชนิดบินข้ามมาทวีปอื่น)
ทีมงานในโครงการจะค้นหาและรายงานทุกๆสปีชีส์ที่พบจากที่ต่างๆ (พันคำว่าโครงการนี้จะทำให้ทราบสถานภาพของผีเสื้อ ช่วยป้องกันการสูญพันธุ์ และเก็บตัวอย่างเพื่อใช้ในอนาคต)และจะให้ข้อมูลแนะการตรวจเอกลักษณ์โดยละเอียดและบอกวิธีค้นหาให้ด้วย ไม่ว่าใครหรือกลุ่มบุคคลใดที่บันทึกสปีชีส์ไว้มากที่สุดจะได้รับรางวัลเที่ยวซาฟารีรวมอาหารฟรีพร้อมผู้เชี่ยวชาญ
ต่อไปนี้จะเป็นรายละเอียดของสปีชีส์ต่างๆ วันนี้ในหนังสือพิมพ์นำเสนอ 4 ชนิด

1. Small tortoiseshell Aglais urticae

  • เป็นผีเสื้อที่รู้จักดีมากที่สุดชนิดของประเทศอังกฤษ
  • พบทั่วไปและพบมากตามสวนในฤดูใบไม้ผลิและใบไม้ร่วง
  • พบได้เกือบทุกแหล่ง ตั้งแต่ในเมืองจนไปถึงยอดเขา
  • มักอยู่เป็นฝูงใหญ่
  • จำนวนลดลงจนน่าเป็นห่วงในช่วงสองทศวรรษนี้ และบางทีไม่พบเลย (ลดลง 59% ระหว่าง 1976-2008 ในช่วงสิบปีที่ผ่านมาตัวเลขลดอย่างรวดเร็ว อาจเนื่องจากแมงที่เป็นปรสิตที่เข้ามาในอังกฤษ ชื่อ Sturmia bella และอาจมีปัจจัยอื่นๆร่วมด้วย
  • พืชที่เป็นอาหารตัวลาร์วา: Stinging nettles

2. Peacock Inachis io

  • ผีเสื้อขนาดใหญ่ บินเก่ง และมีสีสรรสวยงาม
  • มีจุดแต้มคล้ายลูกตาชัดเจนบนปลายปีกหน้าและหลัง เหมือนจุดกลมที่เห็นบนหางของนกยูง (คงเป็นที่มาของชื่อ!) ที่วิวัฒนาการมาเพื่อทำให้สัตว์ที่มาจับกินงง
  • ใต้ปีกมืดทำให้แยกจากใบไม้ได้ยาก
  • พืชที่เป็นอาหารตัวลาร์วา: Stinging nettles (ภาพข้างบนครับ)
  • แหล่งที่พบได้: สวนทั่วไป สวนสาธารณะ สวนไม้ผลเศรษฐกิจ (orchards) และตามทางเดินในป่า(woodland rides) ทั่วอังกฤษ
  • จำนวนเพิ่มขึ้น 43% ระหว่าง 1976–2008 กระจายไปทางเหนือ โดยเฉพาะสก็อตแลนด์ อาจเนื่องจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสภาพอากาศ

 

3. Red admiral Vanessa atalanta

  • With its velvety black wings splashed with scarlet and white, this is many people's favourite butterfly. A large, strong-flying insect, it was formerly a migrant arriving from continental Europe in spring, but in recent years it has begun to overwinter in Britain and now adults can be regularly seen on warm January days.
  • Larval food plants: Stinging nettles.
  • Where seen: Gardens, parks, any flower-rich habitat across Britain.
  • Current conservation status: Increase of 359 per cent 1976–2008. Migrant that has colonised in the last decade and begun regular overwintering in southern Britain. Numbers strongly increasing, but still dependent on levels of migration. Increase seen as more evidence of the effects of climate change.

 

4. Comma Polygonia c-album

  • An orange and brown butterfly with ragged edges to the wings, which, here again, adds to the dead-leaf effect when the wings are closed. A white mark on the undersides resembles a comma. Following a decline in the mid-20th century, the comma has made a remarkable comeback and has spread north as far as Scotland.
  • Larval food plants: Nettles, hops, elms.
  • Where seen: Open woodland and woodland edges. Seen more in gardens in the autumn. Found over most of England and Wales, now into southern Scotland.
  • Current conservation status: Increase of 253 per cent from 1976 to 2008 and has spread north by more than 120 miles in the past 20 years (six miles a year), probably in response to climate change. It has also been spotted in Ireland in the past few years.
