Perhaps, there is a need to look at 'upstream' (foundational) and 'downstream'(derivarive) learning. It goes without argument that 'foundational knowledge' must be carefully crafted and applied to learners so that it forms a 'good tool set' for learners to develop 'derivative knowledge' on their own.
Whar is 'foundational knowledge'? That is a 'good question'!
'I say' from a Buddhists' point of view, understanding the 3 characteristics of the world [anicca,m; dukkhu.m; anatta], "the 4 ariya-sacca" (how to solve a ptoblem - dukkha), (the 4 parts [look under cover; test and tell, use with confidence; and 'repeat'] of) Gaalaamasutta and "the heart of Buddhism" [do no evil; do only good; purify the mind] form the core of foundational knowledge for living and learning. Lives can build on from this base. Other learning too,
