เข้าสู่สังคมสูงวัย..ในเครื่องบินขนาบซ้ายขวาด้วยคุณยายและคุณปู่..คุณยายชาวเกาหลีอายุประมาณ 60-70 ปี เดินทางคนเดียวไปหาน้องสาว พูดภาษาอังกฤษไม่ได้ แต่อารมณ์ดี ช่วยเหลือตัวเองได้ทุกอย่าง..ส่วนคุณปู่ น่าจะเป็นยุโรปหรืออเมริกัน อายุน่าจะเกิน 80 ปี มีวีรกรรมน่าจดจำ คือ ลืมกระเป๋าสะพายสองใบไว้ที่ไหนสักแห่ง ดีที่เจ้าหน้าที่ตามหามาให้ทัน, ตอนแอร์ ถามให้เลือกอาหาร คุณปู่ก็นั่งนึกอยู่นานมากๆ จนแอร์เลือกให้แทน, เดินไปห้องน้ำ แล้วกลับมาหลงหาที่นั่งไม่เจอ.. ที่สำคัญ ตอนข้าพเจ้านอนหลับ อยู่ดีๆ คุณปู่ก็ดึงหมอนข้าพเจ้าเอาไปหนุนแขนแกหน้าตาเฉย :}  -- สรุป คุณปู่เข้าเกณฑ์ โรคสมองเสื่อมค่อนข้างมาก คือ
1. เสียความจำ  ลืมของ ลืมทิศทาง
ร่วมกับ
2. เสียความสามารถทางความคิด-cognitive คือ สูญเสียการตัดสินใจการพูด การกระทำอย่างมีเหตุมีีผล
ในระดับกระทบชีวิตประจำวัน น่าเป็นห่วงหากต้องเดินทางคนเดียวแบบนี้บ่อยๆ

น่าเขียนเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ ร่วมกับหนังเรื่อง In Time ค่ะ (รอให้หายเมาเครื่องก่อน :)

1) Two words appear odd to me.

สังคม สูงวัย (high age? adjective before noun as in English?)

ผู้สูงอายุ (the aged)

So, simple words are now --not polite--? discriminatory?

2) An 'old' friend of mine went out everyday, traveled to strange land (Tibet, Mongolia, Greenland, Peru,...) by herself. In her 70s, she said she hate dying in a rocking chair while knitting, she thought falling off a cliff in Kathmandu would be more romantic. Who could blame her? I still think she was living at her best at 82.

3) Would we think about and care for young children in the same way?

Would we think and act in the way other people would expect us to?

[Remember 'copying' is one very common 'mass behaviour' though copying is not 'well accepted'.

Nature uses 'copying' in regeneration and reproduction, but Man likes 'novelty' and uniqueness.]

ความจริงคนที่นั่งอยู่ระหว่าง คุณปู่ กับ คุณยาย ก็ เป็นคนแวดวงเดียวกันนะครับ อิ อิ

I impress your notice "สูงอายุ" why not "อายุสูง"
as well as we never say "สูงรายได้" instead "รายได้สูง"  

I think we avoid saying "elder" because its' meaning include physical appearance. Meanwhile "aging" sound specific to chronological age only - that's mean they still able to be look young ( or young at heart as your friend) in 60 years old.

This made me think with more two tricky terms.
"Geriatric medicine"  =  "เวชศาสตร์ผู้สูงอายุ"  
" Antiaging medicine" = "เวชศาสตร์อายุรวัตร"
It sound close but different paradigm ( Accept and live with aging happily  VS Prevent agging and try to be forever young)
